Town Plannners Blame Govt. Failures On Urban Development – TPL Olutoyin Ayinde


 

Disorganized physical environment, disjointed road Networks and uncoordinated housing development in Nigerian Towns and Cities has been attributed to failure by Government at all levels to recognize the role of Town Planning.

TPL Olutoyin Ayinde, National President, Nigerian Institute of Town Plannners made the disclosure at the 2020 World Town Plan Day Celebration held in Lokoja under the theme: ” Rebuilding Our Broken Cities”: Role of Town Planning, lamented that the Failure to recognize the role of town Plannners, has also led to Several uncompleted and abandoned projects scattered all across the country, making way for the springing up of informal settlements.

While noting that by not given attention to the place of Town Plannners by the country, TPL Olutoyin said it would be to the peril of those ignoring the profession, advocated due recognition to the Town Planning profession pointing out that it would assist in checking congestion of limited facilities and to also stop straining the capacity of the urban areas for resilience to natural and artificial disasters.

Town Planning when best utilized, the National President disclosed would be responsible for upholding the Social pillars of equity, diversity and inclusion, a factor without which urban societies would be disconnected, added that Town Planning has the capacity of promoting area liveable for humanity by helping in building safer cities.

TPL Olutoyin called on the Government to engage the services of Town Plannners towards checking unsustainable developement, population growth and climate change, said the profession has presented itself to Government to enable it build urban facilities that occurred after the #ENDSARS protests as well as Several other broken cities.

Earlier in an opening remarks, the
TPL Dr Adams Ndalai Baba, Chairman of Kogi State Chapter of Nigeria Institute of Town Plannners, called on the State Government to gazzate the Nigerian Urban and Regional Planning Law of 1992 and make it functional in view of the inherent benefits associated with the law.

He said when domesticated, the law would enable full Implementation and sanction on defaulters who negate town Planning laws, said with full engagement of Town Plannners by the Kogi State Government, issues of perennial flooding affecting the State, accessibility, plan preparation and urban safety would be greatly put in place and incidences reduced to it bearest minimum.
