In my previous articles, I highlighted different qualities of a good leader, and what we should look out for in electing the next Chief Executive of Kogi state. While I acknowledge how impossible for a single individual to posses such great qualities, I strongly believe that a good leader should posses about half of those qualities, he must be determined, intentional and passionate in identifying good people of similar or greater qualities to work with. I have carefully read about two great individuals (though one of them is late) who are basically not the best by all standards but they have some great attributes of a good leader.
Late President Umaru Yaradua of Nigeria, who served from 2007 until his death in 2010, was considered a unique leader for several reasons:
1. Humility and Simplicity: Yaradua was known for his humility and simplicity, which set him apart from many other political leaders. He lived a modest lifestyle and was not known for extravagant displays of wealth or power.
2. Commitment to the Rule of Law: Yaradua was dedicated to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that all individuals were treated fairly and justly. He emphasized the importance of due process and sought to strengthen the judiciary to ensure an independent and impartial legal system.
3. Fight Against Corruption: Yaradua recognized the detrimental effects of corruption on Nigeria’s development and made efforts to combat it. He created institutions such as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to investigate and prosecute corrupt individuals, sending a strong message against corruption.
4. Focus on Education: Yaradua placed significant emphasis on education as a means to drive development and reduce poverty in Nigeria. He implemented policies aimed at improving access to quality education, increasing the number of schools and teachers, and expanding opportunities for vocational and technical training.
5. Health Initiatives: Yaradua launched various health initiatives, including the establishment of the National Strategic Health Development Plan (NSHDP), aimed at improving healthcare infrastructure, reducing maternal and child mortality rates, and combating diseases such as HIV/AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis.
6. Regional Diplomacy: Yaradua actively engaged in regional diplomacy and sought to strengthen Nigeria’s relationships with neighboring countries. He played a key role in resolving conflicts in the Niger Delta region and worked towards fostering stability and cooperation within West Africa.
7. Commitment to Electoral Reforms: Yaradua recognized the need for electoral reforms to ensure free and fair elections in Nigeria. He supported the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in conducting credible elections and promoted measures to minimize electoral violence and irregularities.
Overall, Yaradua’s leadership was characterized by his integrity, commitment to the rule of law, focus on education and healthcare, and efforts to combat corruption. He was regarded as a leader who genuinely cared about the welfare and development of Nigeria and its people.

President Bola Tinubu, a prominent Nigerian politician, has been praised for several unique qualities and leadership approaches. Here are some aspects that make him stand out:
1. Political Strategy: Tinubu is known for his exceptional political strategy and coalition-building skills. He played a crucial role in the formation of the All Progressives Congress (APC), a merger of several opposition parties in Nigeria, which led to the defeat of the ruling party in the 2015 presidential election. His ability to bring diverse groups together and forge alliances has been recognized as a unique strength.
2. Economic Reforms: Tinubu is widely acknowledged for his economic reforms in Lagos State, where he served as governor from 1999 to 2007. His administration implemented policies that improved revenue generation, public finance management, and infrastructure development. These reforms helped transform Lagos into a major economic hub in Nigeria and attracted significant investments.
3. Grassroots Mobilization: Tinubu has a strong grassroots support base and is renowned for his ability to connect with ordinary citizens. He has consistently engaged with local communities and championed causes that resonate with the common people. This has enabled him to build a loyal and dedicated following, which has been instrumental in his political success.
4. Philanthropy and Empowerment: Tinubu has made significant contributions to philanthropy and empowerment initiatives, particularly through his foundation, the Bola Tinubu Foundation. He has supported various programs focused on education, healthcare, poverty alleviation, and youth empowerment. This commitment to social development has endeared him to many Nigerians and showcases his dedication to improving the lives of the less privileged.
5. Political Mentorship: Tinubu has played a pivotal role in mentoring and nurturing young politicians, often referred to as the “Tinubu Boys.” Many of his mentees have gone on to hold significant political positions at both state and federal levels. His commitment to grooming the next generation of leaders has been seen as a unique approach that fosters continuity and ensures the longevity of his political influence.
It is important to note that while Tinubu has been a significant political figure in Nigeria, he became the President in May 2023 under a very controversial election as opined by both local and external observers.
The next Chief Executive of Kogi state doesn’t necessarily have to be a saint but he/she must posses some, if not all the attributes of both leaders discussed above.
