The Executive Chairman, Kogi State Science, Technical Education and Teaching Service Commission (STETSCOM), Mrs. Cecilia Cook has denied allegations of bribery for the redeployment of secondary school principals in Kogi Eastern part of the state.
Mrs. Cook made the remark while reacting to the reports making the rounds that “Principals of Secondary Schools in Kogi East have taken to bribing officials of STETSCOM, an education agency in the Ministry of Education thereby leading to
indiscriminate redeployment of Secondary School Principals in the eastern part of the state.”
The Executive Chairman described the report as untrue and handiwork of agents of anti EBIGO agenda of the present administration of Governor Yahaya Bello aimed at ensuring one indivisible Kogi State.
According to her, the Commission is empowered by law to transfer school Principals after every five years in a particular school.
“It is Government’s policy that you can’t remain Principal of a School for 5 years without being transferred but some people have spent up to 15 years as principals and they’re Lord without any development. That’s why we did a screening for Principals to ascertain the years they have spent and do the needful.”
She said under the new Education Policy, any Principal of a Science Secondary school must be science inclined so as to add value to school administration, hence the recent redeployment of teachers which according to her is across all schools in the state.
“You cannot head a science school if you did not study one of the core science subjects. For example, a practical might be going on in a school and if you don’t have an idea as a principal, how can you correct your teachers?” Mrs. Cook explained.
The STETSCOM Boss further said that ” In the new Education Policy, those that are science oriented should head all science schools, that is what we are doing to improve science and technology in the state.”
She noted that the era when an Art Teacher will be heading Science school is over as the present administration is committed to doing the right thing for the betterment of education in Kogi.
The Executive Chairman pointed out that while efforts are in top gear to recruit more teachers, the Commission is making frantic move to maximize the teachers available for effective result.
Mrs. Cook stated that instead of supporting the move, some persons are bent on tarnishing her image and that of the Commission, adding that ” but I want to assure you that we will investigate the matter and anyone found wanting will face the full weight of the law.
She advised the media to cross-check facts before going to publication and enjoined the public to dispel the rumour.
