In line with his vision to support the State Government’s sanitation drive, the Member representing Calabar Municipality/Odukpani Federal Constituency, Rep. Bassey Akiba, on Saturday, led cooperative members and residents in environmental clean-up within Calabar Municipality.
Accompanied by aides and government functionaries including the Special Adviser to the Governor on Cooperative Matters, Dr. Edem Ebong, Calabar Municipality Vice Chairman, Pastor Okon Nyong, Rep Akiba said the need to address the pressing issue of environmental sanitation underscore the essential nature of collective participation in fostering a clean and healthy environment.
According to the federal parliamentarian, “Today, environmental sanitation is more than just a government initiative or the duty of a select few; it is a societal obligation that calls for the involvement of every individual, organization, and community. The health of our environment directly affects the well-being of our citizens, and we must all take ownership of our environment”.
The member of parliament noted that the ongoing challenges of waste management, pollution, and environmental degradation require a multi-faceted approach, adding that while governmental policies and actions are crucial, they are not sufficient on their own, hence all hands must be on deck for a clean and healthy environment.
While Rep. Akiba was leading the sanitation drive in Ward 3, his Ward Liaison Officers in Wards 1, 2, 9, and 10 were also leading the sanitation exercise in their various Wards.
Residents and community leaders hailed the lawmaker’s initiative, stating: “It is time for us to come together as a cohesive unit, to educate ourselves and others about the importance of environmental sanitation, and to foster a culture of accountability and care for our surroundings”.
Rep. Akiba has been driving various programmes and projects aimed at uplifting the living standards of communities in Calabar Municipality/Odukpani Federal Constituency. His environmental sanitation efforts in promoting a cleaner and healthier environment has been making waves and garnering widespread commendation.
