Gale of Resignation from PDP: Why the PDP Will Bounce Back.
In recent times, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has witnessed a string of high “profile resignations and defections — a political storm that has generated both anxiety and speculation within Nigeria’s political space.
From former governors to legislators and party stalwarts, the gale of exit has undoubtedly rattled the party’s structure.
Yet, history teaches us that political turbulence does not always spell the end — especially for a party like the PDP with deep roots, national spread, and resilient institutions.
1. PDP Has Bounced Back Before — Will Again This is not the first tme the PDP has faced internal convulsions.
After losing the presidency in 2015, many predicted its complete collapse. But the party defied expectations — regaining strength, securing multiple governorships, and maintaining it relevance in national discourse. Its survival instinct is unmatched, and its capacity to reorganize remains solid.
2. PDP is Still the Only Truly National Party Despite the defections, the PDP remains the only party with visible structures in all the states and the FCT. Its grassroots networks, loyal voter base, and historical presence continue to give it an edge over personality-driven political outfits.
Even in states where it is not in power, the PDP commands strong followership and influence.
3. Resignations often Reftect Personal interests — Not Party ideology Many of those exiting the party do so for personal political ambitions, not ideological reasons. Most are driven by access to power or relevance in the ruling party. The PDP’s strength lies in its capacity to reinvent and grow beyond individuals. As new leaders emerge from within — untainted, visionary, and reform-minded — the party will reclaim its mantle.
4. Nigerians Are Yearning for a Credible Alternative With mounting socio-economic challenges, insecurity, and disillusionment under the ruling APC, millions of Nigerians are searching for hope. The PDP, with strategic reforms and youth engagement, remains the best-placed platform to provide that hope. What is required now.
Is unity, discipline, and a renewed focus on issue-based politics.
5. The PDP’s Bounce-Back Depends on Strategic Reforms For the PDP to bounce back stronger, it must: Embrace internal democracy and avoid imposition of candidates. Rebuild trust emong members, especially at the grassroots. Open its doors wider to youth and technocrats. Redefine its message — with bold policy ideas that inspire the electorate.
Conclusion: The gale of resignations, while concerning, is not fatal. It is a moment of political realignment and purification. If the PDP embraces this phase with courage, reform and inclusivity, it will emerge stronger, leaner, and more prepared to lead Nigeria into a new era of hope and prosperity.
After every storm comes the calm — and after every fall, the bounce.
For the PDP, the bounce back is not a matter of if — but when.
