By joshua Ogori Mourns Dr. Segun Nezar Keyi, 72, Pioneer Physician And Humanitarian Buried After Funeral Service At St. Peter’s Cathedral
The remains of Late Dr. Segun Nezar Keyi will be laid to rest after a funeral service held at the Cathedral of St. Peter, Ogori, Diocese of Ogori Magongo, Church of Nigeria Anglican Communion. Late Dr. Segun Nezar Keyi died at the age of 72.
The funeral service, conducted by Ven. Paul Usman, Sub-Dean of the Cathedral, took his message from Luke Chapter 2 vs 16, titled “You in your lifetime”.
He urged the living to live a life of service to God and humanity, warning against the misuse of wealth, power, and position to intimidate others.
The clergyman described the late physician as a man who “made positive history in his lifetime” through service, compassion, and integrity.
He said everyone will give account according to the works done in their lifetime, noting that like the rich man and Lazarus in the Bible, there is no change after death but only the reality of rejoicing or regret. “Now is the day of salvation,” he concluded.
In her tribute, his wife, Mrs. Joan Keyi said:
“My dearest husband, Dr. Nezar Segun Keyi, your passing has left a void that words cannot fill. You were a loving husband, devoted father, good Christian and a peaceful man whose kindness and generosity touched so many lives.
Thank you for the beautiful years we shared, for your unwavering support, wisdom, and the love you gave so freely to our family and everyone around you. You lived a life of service, compassion, and humility, and your legacy will continue to speak through the countess lives you impacted. Rest peacefully, my beloved husband, until we meet again.”
From his daughter, Mrs. Lovelyn Unini Mosugu: “My Daddy, my Hero! You were my pillar of strength, my constant support, and my guide. Your presence whole wide world.
Even as a little girl, I understood that many of the decisions you made after Mum passed away were for our well-being and to ensure we had a good life. Thank you for always putting us first. Thank you for defending us when necessary, and for instilling in us the values of good character, generosity, and compassion.
You were a truly great man who lived an impactful life, and your legacy continues to shine through all who were privileged to know you. Oh, my personal medical consultant! I will miss you forever. Tigure Edada Oboro. Rest well, Daddy.”
In a brief biography titled “A Life of Service and Excellence”, Dr. Nezar Segun Keyi was born on July 7, 1954, in Ogori, Kogi State, to Pa Samson Dangana Aiye Keyi and Madam Dorcas Owoyemi Dangana Aiye Keyi.
He began his education at St. Peter’s Primary School, Ogori, from 1962 to 1968, and later attended Ochaja Secondary School. Driven by a quest for academic excellence, he gained admission to the University of Ibadan/University College Hospital, Ibadan, where he studied Medicine and obtained his MBBS degree.
Dr. Keyi was a pioneer physician who established Lafia Hospital, Abaji-Abuja, the very first hospital in Abaji. He was widely known as “Baban Likita” of Abaji for his dedication to accessible healthcare in rural communities. Through decades of service, he touched countless lives with his calm nature, generosity, and commitment to compassionate care.
A proud member of the Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, Guild of Medical Directors, and Association of General and Private Medical Practitioners of Nigeria, Dr. Keyi was described by colleagues as a man of honor and integrity who upheld the fear of God in his practice.
He is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, siblings, and a wide network of mentees, patients, and friends whose lives he impacted.
He will be remembered as a peaceful, humble, and generous man whose legacy of service to God and humanity continues to endure.
