Kogi State Commissioner of Education, Science and Technology, Mr Wemi Jones says Odu Technical School in Dekina Local Government is one of the seventeen Technical Schools to be upgraded in the state.
Mr Wemi made the remark while receiving members of the Odu Technical School Old Students Association (OTOSA) in Lokoja.
The Commissioner who was represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Pastor Emmanuel Idenyi said the measure is to enable Odu Technical College meet its original status.
He commended the old students Association, OTOSA for reawakening the vision and mission of the founding fathers of the school, stressing that the college was known for its distinctive qualities in time past.
The Commissioner explained that the move to upgrade seventeen Technical colleges in addition to the existing four was part of governments efforts to promote sciences and technical education.
According to him, the Science and Technical schools are expected to feed the new Confluence University of Science and Technology at Osara.
Wemi also appreciated OTOSA members for acknowledging government’s efforts in education sector, adding that Governor Yahaya Bello is the first to commit twenty percent of annual budget to education.
Earlier, the President of Odu Technical School Old Students Association, Engineer Sunday Emmanuel Anaja said the visit was to intimate government on the deplorable condition of their old school which needed urgent attention.
Engineer Anaja noted that there was need to upgrade the school in view of the benefits therein, especially in reducing unemployment in the state.
The OTOSA President promised continued
synergy with the Ministry with a view to repositioning the school for optimum delivery in employment generation and reducing youth restiveness.
In a remark, an astute surveyor and General Overseer of Sanctuary of Praise Church, Lokoja, Reverend John Odoh who is also an old student emphasized the importance of technical education in the present day society, saying that the need for government to intervene cannot be over emphasized.
