Northern Christians Need One of Their Own for True Protection, Says YCD Coordinator Dinfa
The National Coordinator of the Young Christian Democrats (YCD), Mr. Ezekiel Dinfa, has said that only a Northern Christian president can guarantee the safety and future of Northern Christians and minority groups currently facing the threat of extremism and terrorism in the region.
Dinfa made the remark in response to a recent statement by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during his visit to Jos, where Tinubu reportedly urged Christian Northerners to support him, citing his respect for religious freedom and the fact that his wife is a pastor.
According to Dinfa, Tinubu’s comments were misplaced and failed to capture the realities faced by Northern Christians. “This is not the time for that kind of statement. Even Southern Christians do not understand what we are going through. Only a Northern Christian does,” he stated.
The YCD coordinator disclosed that the group had already identified a leader capable of addressing the challenges facing Northern Christians — Dr. Joel Gbenga Hashim, a founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and a successful entrepreneur.
“Dr. Hashim is a fair-minded democrat who understands both national security and economics. Like most Northern Christians, he also has Muslim roots and will protect all Nigerians, including Muslims,” Dinfa said.
He further described Dr. Hashim as a bridge-builder with both Northern and Southern heritage, likening him to General Yakubu Gowon, a Plateau-born leader credited with reuniting Nigeria after the civil war.
“Dr. Hashim is the true unifier. He has the capacity to manage Nigeria’s diversity, while many others in the race do not even understand the country,” Dinfa added.
