NESREA Celebrates World Environment Day, Plant Trees in Kogi


 

The National Environmental Standards and Regulation Enforcement Agency (NESREA) Kogi office, has celebrated World Environment Day 2021, with the planting of trees in the state.

The State Coordinator of NESREA, Mr Jimoh Lanre, noted that the theme for 2021 WED celebration is: “Ecosystem Restoration” as declared by the United Nations (UN).

He stressed that conscious efforts should be put up by the people to enable the recovery of the lost glory of the land which he said was in dire need of restoration.

Lanre described WED celebration as one of the biggest event worldwide (usually celebrated on 5th June); an annual event powered by the United Nations since 1974.

According to him, the celebration of WED has become necessary so as to create awareness on the need to understand the value of nature as well as repositioning relationships.

The Guest Speaker at the event, Dr Joel Awodi, in his presentation described Ecosystem Restoration as an “intentional activity that initiates or accelerates the recovery of a degraded, damaged ecosystem with respect to it’s health, integrity services and sustainability.

Awodi described various ways by which we could get involved in Ecosystem Restoration which includes, Greening the Environment by planting trees, cleaning up drainages, parks, lakes, among others.

Goodwill messages were also delivered by various organizations at the occasion.

The Secretary to Kogi State Government, ably represented by the Permanent Secretary of the office, Mr Ephraim Amurawaiye, congratulated the Federal Agency for the celebration.

She assured NESREA of the State Government undisputed supports and collaboration where necessary.

The State Commissioner for Environment, represented by the Director Climate Change of the ministry, Mrs Docas Enehe, stressed the need to sensitize the masses on Ecosystem Restoration.

The pick of event was the “Tree Planting Exercise” which was symbolic to mark the day.
