Both chambers of the National Assembly will ensure the speedy passage of the Electoral Amendment Bill currently before the National Assembly, Lokoja/Kogi lawmaker, Hon. Shaba Ibrahim MHR; has disclosed.
The lawmaker made this revelation while speaking about the ongoing constitutional review hearings, on Thursday while briefing PDP stakeholders and supporters in Kogi West senatorial constituency, during zonal meeting.
The lawmaker lamented the refusal of the Federal Executive to sign the Electoral Bill in 2019. He blamed those who are currently taking advantage of the loopholes in the current Electoral Act as the forces against the signing of the Electoral Bill by the Federal Executive.
He called on Civil Society Organisations and International Community, to brace up to put pressure on the Federal Executive when the Electoral Bill is passed and put before it (the Federal Executive) for signing into law.
The PDP lawmaker stressed that if members of the general public who are of goodwill don’t rise up to pressurize the Executive when the Bill is before it for signing, the same forces gaining from the current loopholes in the current Electoral Act, will likely rise again to oppose the signing of the current Bill.
He expressed optimism that if the Electoral Amendment Bill is signed into law, as the Bill aims to set standard for a free and fair electoral process, the people’s mandate shall emerge victorious in the forthcoming elections afterwards.
He appealed to party faithfuls to sensitise and mobilise people generally in their various wards and communities to turn out en masse and register during the forthcoming continuous voters registration exercise.
