…. Boy’s mother describes Gov. Bello as a nationalists
The Kogi State Specialist Hospital has discharged and referred one David Mathew Ewongolu, a boy whose step mother allegedly maltreated and abused with a pressing iron.
The boy whose father is a soldier, had sustained various degrees of injuries on his bottocks, was today discharged and referred to the Nasarawa Specialist Hospital, Lafia.
The boy who has regained consciousness, can now seat on his bottock, had to be released to his biological mother, who has three other children but resident in Lafia.
The boys mother, Margret Emmanuel described Gov. Bello as a Nationalists who would go all out to provide care for a Nasarawa State Indigene who was challenged irrespective of his place of origin, said he is the kind of leader Nigeria needs.
The boy had in an Interview said he sustained the injuries on his buttock from his stepmom for using part of his clothing to make duster, saying that it looks like it was burnt with a hot electric Iron.
Mathew appreciated Gov. Yahaya Bello for coming to his assistance when he was sick, said he is now able to seat, prayed God to grant the Governor and State many successes.
Speaking with thenigerianpost, at the State Specialist Hospital, the Secretary to the Kogi State Government, Dr. Mrs Folashade Ayoade Arike, expressed satisfaction with the recovery rate of Mathew.
She also added her voice for Nigerians to look in the direction of Gov. Bello, pointing out that like was observed by the mother of Mathew, not minding his state of origin, the Governor ensured that the State Government was responsible for his treatment.
She disclosed that the State Government has offseted the medical bills of Mathew while in the hospital and will continue afterwards, praised Gov. Yahaya Bello for his humanitarian gesture.
She called on mother’s to show love to their children whether biological or not, pointing out that children are gifts from God.
Similarly, Hajia Fatima Buba, Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development praised Gov. Bello for his quick response, said
The Executive Director, Challenged Parenthood Initiatives, Eunice Abimbola Agbogun, who discovered and unraveled the maltreatment and abuse of David Mathew Ewongolu by his step mother also commended Gov. Yahaya Bello for his swift responses to take up the medical bills of the boy.
The Executive Director CPI disclosed that the case was first reported to her when someone from Abuja forwarded the pictures of the woman and the boy trending on social media.
She said she immediately swung into action by calling Mr. Williams Ayah the Police PRO who immediately refered her to D Division were she met with the DPO and reported the case, leading to actions that led to the arrest of the woman.
The Executive Director said she further called the Director Child MWASD to ask her if they were aware of the case leading to the arrest of the woman.
According to her, ” the woman was arrested and put in the cell. We took the boy to the Police Clinic for treatment. CPI paid for all the initial treatment after which I called the Commissioner that the Ministry needs to provide shelter for the boy because the father wants to take him back to the same house were the child was abused and I immediately said that it cannot happen.
I also called the SSG and they came to meet me and finally resolved to take him to State Specialist hospital.
The Executive Director commended Gov. Bello for his interest in the matter and for directing that the State Government to foot all the bills, lauded the SSG for her interest in the matter, and for her motherly love.
The Executive Director used the opportunity to request the Gov. Bello to kindly assent to the Kogi State Violence Against Prohibition Persons Bill passed by the State Assembly about a year ago, pointing out that it has the propensity to check the rising violence and abuse.
She said considering the rate of abuses and violence that is perpetrated against women and children in the state, the VAPP Bill will go along way to reducing violence and abuses if signed into law.
She pointed out that the predicament of David Mathew Ewongolu received action because it was brought to the fore by many person’s, disclosed that many of such abuses are happening and there’s no voice to speak for them
It would be recalled that after thorough interrogation, Mrs. Elizabeth Abu the step mother to Matthew who is Married to Ewongolu Emmanuel confessed to the crime, saying she did not intend to inflict such pain on the boy.
Recalled also that an Upper Area Court sitting in Lokoja, had remanded Mrs Elizabeth Abu in the custody of the Criminal Investigation Department to enable the Police conclude investigation on the alledged abuse and maltreatment.
The Court presided over by Mopa A. M, had granted the request of the Police Prosecuting Counsel for the suspect to be remanded to enable the Police to conclude investigation on alledged case of abuse and maltreatment.
Addressing the Court,
Musa Saidat, Representing the OC Legal and Prosecution, Nigerian Police, Kogi State Command, who filed an experte application dated sough the court to remand the suspect and to enable the Police conclude investigation on an abuse and maltreatment by Mrs Elizabeth Abu.
The Prosecution citing
Section 291 and 292, admissions of criminal justice law 2017, sought an order to remand the suspect at CID facility.
The Prosecution supported her experte order with 7 paragraph affidavit, deposed to by Inspector, Ubana Ibe.
The trial Judge in his ruling granted the request of the Prosecution asked that the suspect be remanded in the CID facility.
As at time of writing this report, the suspect is in Okene Women Correctional Center, in Okene.
