LABOUR PARTY NATIONAL CONVENTION:
Communique issued by the Big Tent State Coordinators

Date: March 19, 2024

Preamble:

We, the State Coordinators of the Big Tent from the 36 States and the FCT, convened virtually on our bi-monthly Meetings, which held on Tuesday, March 19, 2024. Our collective purpose was to address the purported convention announced by the Labour Party under the leadership of Barr. Julius Abure. Rooted in our commitment to accountability, fairness, equity, transparency, and justice – the core tenets of the Obideints movement – we embarked on this discussion to safeguard the interests of the grassroots populace and all citizens of Nigeria.

Key Resolutions:

1. Denouncement of the Purported Convention: We unequivocally denounce the purported convention orchestrated by Barr. Julius Abure, which failed to involve party members in the decision-making process. The absence of prior knowledge regarding organized congresses from ward to local government and then to state leadership across all 36 states undermines democratic principles within the party.

3. Demand for Reversal: We demand the reversal of the purported convention by the leadership of the Labour Party. It is imperative that due process is followed to restore the trust of party faithfuls across the board.

Commitment to Action:

We are steadfast in our determination to collaborate with the party and other stakeholders to:

1. Promote Proper Convention Procedures: We advocate for an accountable, transparent, fair, and just convention process aligned with democratic norms and the party’s constitution.

4. Uphold Party Integrity: We pledge to strengthen the party’s activities in accordance with the law and the will of the people, as enshrined in the party’s constitution.

Condemnation of Convention:

We vehemently condemn the convention organized by Abure, scheduled for March 27, 2024, as an affront to party members’ will and a violation of democratic principles. We call for the immediate cessation of such clandestine activities and urge the holding of proper ward, local government, and state congresses in accordance with the party’s constitution.
