
KOGI STATE GOVERNMENT THROUGH KOSEMA INAUGURATES LOCAL GOVERNMENT EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT COMMITTEES (LEMC), KICK-STARTS WITH LOKOJA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA

This initiative is to enhance disaster mitigation and response at the grassroots level.
The Inauguration, which was conducted at Lokoja LGA Councils’ Hall also witnessed the presence of the Executive Secretary KOSEMA, Alh Mouktar Atimah; as well as SEMA management team, and other Disaster Response Team at state level, which included the Special Adviser on SEMA to Kogi State Governor, Dr Sandra Musa; Special Adviser on Emergency to Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Muhammed Shuaibu; as well as Special Adviser on IDPs to Kogi State Governor, Hon. Jibrin Ibrahim; Senior Special Assistant on Emergency to Kogi State Governor, Hon. Otaru Salihu; and representatives from different humantarian NGOs in Kogi State.
The LEMC comprises representatives from various sectors, including Local Government Officials, Community Leaders, Security Agencies, Traditional Rulers, Religious Leaders, Emergency Responders and Civil Society Organizations.
The Executive Secretary KOSEMA while inaugurating the committee on behalf of Kogi State Government, said that His Excellency Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, has charged them to task the Committee with the responsibility of effective emergency response and notifying the State government through SEMA as the case maybe of any forms of disasters at the grassroots level, implementing measures to mitigate risks, preparedness, response and recovery plans.
Atimah assured continued government backing for LEMC’s operations and further announced 13 official designated IDPs camps in Lokoja LGA to the Committee, urging the members to extend their reach to communities.
In his remarks, the Special Adviser on Emergency to Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Muhammed Shuaibu, congratulated the committee, and advised them to work closely with SEMA, urging them to create public awareness of potential disasters in their communities and educate people on safety measures against any disaster.
Speaking on behalf of LEMC, the Vice Chairman of Lokoja Local Government, also doubles as the Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Patrician Balogun, thanked the State Government for the opportunity given to them, and assured to work hard to achieve the objectives of disaster reduction at the grassroots level.
