KOGI STATE COUNCIL, NIGERIA UNION OF JOURNALISTS (NUJ) CONGRESS – HELD ON FEBRUARY 20, 2021 AT THE NUJ PRESS CENTRE, LOKOJA
COMMUNIQUE:
Preamble:
On Saturday, February 20, 2021, the Kogi State Chapter of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) held her congress to deliberate on the State of the Union and the State of State.
Members from the eight Chapels in attendance deliberated on the aforementioned issues, made observations and agreed thus:
State of the Union:
Congress identified lack of revenue base as one of the major problems affecting the smooth running of the union. Congress called on members to come up with ideas that will enhance the revenue base of the union.
I.D. Card/Membership Renewal:
Congress agreed and fixed first week of April, 2021 as deadline for submission of requests for I.D. card renewal.
Congress asked old/new members to submit their details through the various chapels to the state secretariat.
Chalet:
Congress identified the contributions of individuals that have enhanced the development of the union. Congress specifically commended the Speaker, Kogi State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Kolawole Matthew for his contributions, donations and supports to the union; especially the proposed
chalet extension, which the speaker has agreed to build for the union.
Congress also eulogized the State Commissioner for Works, Engr. Abubakar Ohere for the donation of dozens of chairs to the union.
Congress frowned at the misinterpretation of some members of executive arms/political class whenever suggestions are made on issues that affect the lives of the citizens.
Congress observed that the state government has to a large extent been alive to her responsibility in terms of providing security in the state. Congress therefore commended the state government for its efforts in tackling the
insecurity, bit urged state government to sustain her efforts in securing the lives and property of residents of the state both on the
highways and residential areas.
Congress commended the state government for the Ganaja junction fly-Over project, urged that alternatives routes be provided before the commencement of proper work, to avert suffering of motorists during the project construction.
Congress called on the state government to execute the construction of Ganaja – Otokiti by-pass to ease the heavy traffic of motorists from the Zango metropolis to the main town.
Congress urged the state government to look into the problems of water scarcity in Lokoja and its metropolis.
Congress called on the Federal government to expedite action on the 7.5km Ganaja junction – Ganaja village road before the raining season.
Congress praised the state government for the award of infrastructural projects across the state, called on Ministry of Works to organized an inter-face with journalists (as a matter of urgency) to give a breakdown of all ongoing projects.
Congress hailed the appointment of the former Council Chairman, Comrade Ali Atabor as member governing Council, Prince Abubakar Audu University (PAAU), Anyigba.
