Kogi NGO Network sues for synergy, Appeals for Open Government Partnership
Kogi NGOs Network (KONGONET), a body of Civil Society Organisations and NGOs has called for synergy among members organisations in different thematic areas for better results in advocacy and interventions.
Mr Idris Muraina, Chairman of the Network made the call at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the body on Wednesday in Lokoja.
Muraina said the Civil Society space in the state and as well as across the nation was currently undergoing a face in which the civic space was gradually shrinking requiring extension of hands of support to each other.
“As CSOs, we are those who believe in the rule of law, we believe in the tenets of democracy, we believe in inclusive and participatory form of governance where the ordinary man on the street don’t just see inclusivity but rather feels it.
“Our call for Open Government Partnership (OGP) in the state will continue to be top priority while continuous engagement with the state government and other agencies is a must as we carry on our shoulders the responsibility to ensure government is fair to all”, he said.
Muraina said that the theme of this year’s AGM, “Refocusing CSO Networking in Kogi State” was a reflection of the rejigging of the constitution for it to provide for proper networking for the benefit of all.
“From now we expect better relationship with Implementing Partners (IPs) that are coming to the state, better relationship with the State Government and more implementation of interventions at the community level by organisations on the thematic areas.
“If you are on health, we expect you to do more and on other thematic areas like Education, Agriculture, Health, Vulnerable children, Gender among others. Now there’s going to be a boost in implementation in the community areas”, he added.
Also speaking, Amb. Ahmed Bolori, Special Adviser to Governor Yahaya Bello on Public Relations said Civil Society remained the driving force of Bello’s administration adding that the Governor believed in and valued the CSOs.
He said that most of the governor’s developmental initiatives were inspired and driven by the CSOs.
“We receive and see the Civil Society as a wing of the government that we need to at all times work closely with.”
Bolori however advised the CSOs harmonise their efforts saying, “You are from different organisations, you represent different thematic areas and I believe there is need for serious synergy and harmonization in your efforts.
“Sometimes you might be pursuing one thing not knowing that another person is pursuing the same thing in a better way.
“It is better you identify people already working in that area to see how you can come together and pursue with vigour”, he advised.
