Kogi ACReSAL Trains Communities on Implementation and Management Techniques of Forest Reserves.
The Kogi State Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) Project has organized a 2-day workshop on the implementation and management techniques of the Ofejiji Forest Reserve located in Dekina LGA of Kogi State. The workshop, held in Okura, drew participants from Okura and Ofejiji communities.
Declaring the workshop open, the Project Coordinator, Kogi State ACReSAL, Chief (Barr.) Ladi Ahmed Jatto – OON (represented by the Environmental Safeguards Officer, Samson Benu), commended Okura and Ofejiji communities for their consistent support of ACReSAL’s activities, starting with the rehabilitation of the Okura Nursery. The Project Coordinator reiterated ACReSAL’s desire to improve the livelihoods of the two communities.
Participants were trained on the Community Driven Development (CDD) approach to managing the reserve, among other topics, aligning with Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo’s vision to provide economic succor and empower the community sustainably. The borehole to be sited will serve the dual purpose of sustaining the forest, and providing potable water to over 5,000 community members.
The 60 Ha Ofejiji Forest is expected to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change, while the fruit trees will enhance community livelihoods.
The training program featured an intensive interactive session and stakeholders’ engagement with community leaders.
