‘Justice Sylvester’s Loss Remains One, Too Many’– Gov. Bello

Kogi State Deputy Governor, Chief (Dr.) Edward Onoja on Tuesday, represented his Principal, His Excellency Governor Yahaya Adoza Bello at the Supreme Court of Nigeria to pay respects at the Valedictory Court Session in Honour of the Late Hon. Justice Sylvester Umaru Onu, CON, who died weeks ago.

The Special Court Session which held at the Main Courtroom of the Apex Court was graced by the Chief Justice of Federation, Hon. Dr. Justice Ibrahim Tanko, legal heavyweights drawn from the Bar and Bench, as well as other guests from various works of life.

Addressing newsmen on behalf of his boss, the Governor, Chief Onoja recalled that the loss of the legal luminary remains a tragic one to the Igala Race, Kogi State and the country at large. He bemoaned that Justice Sylvester exited life just in time when his expertise and fatherly counsel were greatly-needed to nip the challenges bedeviling the country in the bud.

He however thanked God for the life of the deceased and praised him for living it in fulfillment through mentorship and love for humanity. While adding that Justice Sylvester leaves indelible marks that would outlive him even in death, Chief Onoja hinted further that Governor Bello idolizes the legal icon, whom he says describes his biography as one “worthy of both commendation and emulation.”

Justice Sylvester Onu who has since been laid to rest in his country-home of Egume, Dekina LGA of Kogi State, was born on June 15, 1938. He attended Government College, Keffi, Ahmadu Bello University, Gibson and Weldon, and the Law School at the School of Oriental and African Studies, part of the Federal University of London, holding several law-related positions before his appointment to the Court of Appeal in 1984, which he left for the Supreme Court in 1993.
