James Abiodun Faleke and the Rare Virtue of Political Maturity
In Nigeria’s often turbulent political landscape, where political disagreements frequently degenerate into enduring rivalries and deep-seated bitterness, instances of reconciliation and political maturity deserve deliberate recognition. One such example is embodied in the conduct and disposition of Hon. James Abiodun Faleke.
The events surrounding the 2015 Kogi State governorship election remain one of the most defining episodes in the state’s democratic history. Following the unfortunate demise of the APC governorship candidate, Prince Abubakar Audu, on the threshold of electoral victory, a constitutional and political conundrum emerged. As Audu’s running mate, many believed that Hon. James Abiodun Faleke was the natural successor to the mandate. The situation generated intense legal contestation, political debate and deep divisions among supporters.
Eventually, providence led to Yahaya Bello emerging as governor, a development that many anticipated would engender permanent animosity between the two political actors. Given Nigeria’s political culture, where grievances are sometimes nurtured for years, such expectations were not entirely unfounded.
However, recent revelations by Faleke himself present a markedly different narrative. Speaking publicly, he disclosed that despite the disputes and political disagreements that followed the 2015 election, communication between him and Yahaya Bello never completely broke down. He recounted meetings, visits and moments of personal interaction that reflected a relationship founded on mutual respect despite political divergence.
This offers a profound lesson in political maturity.
Political leadership is not merely measured by electoral victories or public office. It is equally measured by the capacity to rise above personal disappointment in pursuit of collective harmony. Faleke’s disposition demonstrates that one can vigorously pursue perceived constitutional rights without descending into bitterness or personal hostility. It illustrates that political competition need not culminate in political warfare.
As former United States President John F. Kennedy once observed, “Let us not seek the Republican answer or the Democratic answer, but the right answer.” The essence of democratic politics lies not in perpetual conflict but in the ability to place the larger public interest above personal or factional considerations.
Perhaps the greatest irony is that while political leaders often find avenues for reconciliation and engagement, many of their supporters remain trapped in endless cycles of hostility and vituperation, particularly on social media. Across various platforms, followers frequently engage in insults, attacks and divisive rhetoric in defence of leaders who, behind closed doors, maintain cordial relationships and mutual respect.
The relationship between Faleke and Yahaya Bello offers a refreshing reminder that politics should be about service, ideas, unity and democratic engagement, not bitterness and perpetual hostility, which ultimately serves neither the state nor its people.
Hon. James Abiodun Faleke deserves commendation for demonstrating a level of political maturity that is increasingly rare in contemporary politics. His ability to move beyond the disappointments and controversies of the past, while maintaining his convictions and dignity, reflects the character of a statesman rather than merely that of a politician.
Together, Faleke and Bello have demonstrated that political rivalry need not translate into personal hostility. Their conduct serves as a reminder that politics can be fiercely competitive without becoming destructive, and that the interests of the people are best served when leaders embrace dialogue, mutual respect and reconciliation over bitterness and division.
As Nigeria continues to deepen its democratic culture, the country requires more examples of politics without bitterness, more leaders willing to place peace above personal grievances, and more followers willing to appreciate that disagreement does not necessarily produce enmity.
The story of James Faleke is, ultimately, a story of political maturity, reconciliation and the triumph of wisdom over resentment. It is a lesson that both political leaders and their supporters would do well to emulate.
