An Abuja based socio-political organization, the Equity Democratic Mandate (EDM) has accused operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of working for some shadowy group outside the state who are bent on staining the Kogi state governor untainted image, Governor Yahaya Bello for taking some principled stance on sundry national issues affecting the country.
This is coming just as the group called on the Inspector-General of Police, Alhaji Usman Baba Alkali to commit the Chairman of the EFCC, Mr. Abdulrasheed Bawa to prison for contempt of court.
These are contained in a statement issued by the Executive Director of EDM, Comrade Isah Bala Usman in Abuja on Thursday, wherein, he accused EFCC of political witch hunt on some of the graft cases against some family members of the governor in recent times.
“Our group has been observing the conduct of personnel of the EFCC, particularly the chairman of the commission of late and we are very unhappy with the very unprofessional way the operations of the commission are being carried out.
“Specifically, we have observed with grave concern, how the operatives of the commission have in recent times been throwing away extant rules governing their engagement and acting in a Gestapo manner with regards to how its personnel operate,” Usman said.
The activist on behalf of his group added that though it is not opposed to any kind of effort to rid the country of corruption and corrupt practices, whatever must be done to curb it must be within the ambit of the law in line with global best practices.
“This is not the case with how EFCC operatives have been operating in Kogi State. Our position is further accentuated by the law courts who have not only instituted contempt proceedings against Bawa but have also called on the inspector-general of the police to commit him to prison.
“We are however urging the nation’s number one police officer to do the needful with the hope that such would compel other lower cadre of the commission to always still to their rule of engagement and not to act outside of it.” Usman concluded.
He said the public is becoming uninterested by the continue media trial on Kogi matter, saying it’s a pure witch hunt, political hatchet job. He advice EFCC personnel to engage more on their job rather than this Kogi state governor’s project of “pull him down”
