Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo FCA and the Lasting Value of Humility, Trust and Responsible Leadership

Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo FCA and the Lasting Value of Humility, Trust and Responsible Leadership

Leadership is not measured only by the office one occupies, the resources entrusted to them or the recognition they receive. Its true meaning is often revealed through the respect leaders show others, the promises they honour and the responsibilities they continue to fulfil even when circumstances change. These are values worth reflecting upon in the leadership of His Excellency, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, FCA, Governor of Kogi State.

One quality that deserves attention in Governor Ododo’s leadership is the importance of human relationships, respect and trust. Public office comes with different interests, competing expectations and changing circumstances. Yet the ability to maintain mutual respect, honour relationships and approach people with humility remains an important measure of character.

Recently, His Excellency Kashim Shettima, Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, made remarks appreciating Governor Ododo’s conduct and the respect he has continued to demonstrate towards people who have played important roles in his political journey. Such recognition provides an opportunity to reflect on the significance of gratitude, loyalty and the preservation of relationships in public life.

There is a familiar reality in politics. Relationships that appear strong during periods of political advantage can sometimes weaken when circumstances change. Benefactors, mentors and trusted associates may find themselves forgotten as new opportunities emerge. However, the true value of a relationship is often revealed in what happens after the immediate benefits have passed.

Governor Ododo’s relationship with his political mentor and predecessor, His Excellency, Alhaji Yahaya Adoza Bello, CON, remains an important part of the political history of Kogi State. Their relationship reflects a wider conversation about mentorship, loyalty, gratitude and the responsibilities that come with succeeding someone who played a significant role in one’s political journey.

As Governor Ododo continues to lead the state, mutual respect within that relationship remains significant. Differences, disagreements or moments of tension can arise in any human relationship, including political partnerships. What matters is the willingness to preserve dignity, communicate honestly and seek understanding. Where reconciliation is necessary, sincere dialogue and respectful engagement can help restore confidence and strengthen relationships.

If there are concerns or disagreements between the two leaders, those who value their relationship should encourage sincere communication, mutual understanding and peaceful reconciliation where necessary. No relationship built over years should be treated lightly, and genuine disagreements should not be considered beyond resolution.

Beyond political relationships, governance must also be assessed through its practical impact on ordinary citizens. Roads, educational support, workers’ welfare and the implementation of approved programmes are among the areas through which people experience government directly.

Governor Ododo’s administration has pursued infrastructure projects across Kogi State, including road development and rehabilitation. Such projects are important because reliable roads connect communities, support commercial activities, improve access to essential services and create opportunities for economic growth. Their lasting value will ultimately be measured by their quality, accessibility and benefits to the people who depend on them.

Education is another critical area of public responsibility. Scholarships and other forms of student support can make a meaningful difference to families facing financial difficulties. When properly funded, transparently administered and delivered to eligible beneficiaries, these programmes help students remain in school and pursue their academic ambitions. Continued attention to educational opportunities is essential to the development of Kogi State’s future workforce.

Workers’ welfare also deserves consideration. The regular payment of salaries is a fundamental responsibility of government and an important part of household stability. When salaries are paid promptly, workers can plan their expenses, support their families and meet their obligations with greater confidence. The reported practice of salary payments before the twenty-first day of the month is an area of public interest, while consistency remains an important measure by which workers can assess their welfare.

These issues remind us that leadership is both a human responsibility and an administrative duty. Respectful relationships matter, but so do roads that serve communities, educational opportunities that support young people and salaries that help families meet their daily needs. The two dimensions should complement each other.

Governor Ododo’s position also carries a responsibility to sustain the values of humility and accountability expected of public office holders. Recognition should not be an end in itself. Rather, it should encourage continued service, honest communication and a deeper commitment to the people of Kogi State.

As the political history of Kogi State continues to unfold, the relationship between Governor Ododo and his predecessor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, will remain a subject of public interest. Mutual respect, gratitude and constructive dialogue can help guide their engagement, whatever challenges may arise. The progress of the state is best served when its leaders approach their responsibilities with maturity and keep the interests of the people at the centre of their decisions.

Above all, the greatest legacy of leadership is not simply the number of projects completed or the political relationships maintained. It is the difference made in people’s lives, the trust earned through responsible conduct and the example left for the next generation.
