I am compelled to give an insight into why K-WAEC has not happened in the past few years basically to satisfy curious young minds that have been making enquires through telephone calls and social media.
For the purposes of refreshing the minds, K-WAEC means Kogi Wide Academic Excellence Competition, a state sponsored annual academic competition that aimed at boosting both intellectual and moral lives of young people of the state. It started in 2013 under the Wada administration and was then called G-WAEC, acronym for Gov Wada Academic Excellence Competition.
His Excellency the governor, Capt Idris Ichalla Wada had approved the proposal on its merit and generously funded it annually for the benefit of students and undergraduates of the State. G-WAEC featured crunchy quiz, spelling, Essay and oratoral competition among secondary and tertiary students of Kogi state
After the historic electoral victory of Governor Bello, G-WAEC had to transform to K-WAEC. The outgoing Wada administration was of a different party, PDP while the incoming Bello was of APC. Hardly would a governor sustain a state funded program that is named after his predecessor from an opposition party.
Regardless of what changes we made, we were still sceptical of eventual approval of K-WAEC by the Bello administration. But thanks to the kind intercession of his twin brother and Chief of staff, Edward ONOJA, governor Bello approved it and even took the project a notch higher.
He hosted the first grand finale of KWAEC in the banquet hall, Government House for the first time. All previous grandfinales held in the Glass House. At the event, the governor delayed take off of activities for over an hour because he was engaged by another very important program even though the Secretary to State Government, Dr Folasade Ayoola Ayike was sitting in for him.
When he finally failed to break away from the engagement, the governor ordered the commencent of the event with instruction to hold participants back until he had personally interacted with them, especially winners of different categories.
Besides their budgetted prizes that comprised handsome cash for Education, laptop computers and other Education support items, Governor Bello went ahead to gift all winners with special anniversary school bags when he finally joined them. In full demonstration of his love for students, he also posed for pictures with the students and winners who had decorated Government House premises in coloures of different schools uniforms
Looking back to the manner in which Gov Bello hosted the first edition of K-WAEC under his government, we were very confident that he would fund all other editions in his tenure, but it was not to be
Contrary to what students, schools and parents and the citizenry may believe, the suspension of the annual Kogi Wide Academic Excellence Competition, K-WAEC, has nothing to do with Governor Bello. To the best of my knowledge, His Excellency has never ignored any memo on K-WAEC from any commissioners of Education since it debuted.
There had been five Commissioners of Education between the two admimistrations of govs Wada and Bello, namely: Mrs Grace Elebiyo of blessed memory, Dr Mrs Agnes Okai, PhD, Dr James Toloruleke, PhD; Mrs Rosemary Osikoya and Mr Wemi Jones, the current honourable Commissioner.
With the exceptoon of one, every commissioner had worked to increased the quality and tempo of the project, albeit gradually.
Late Elebiyo took the first bold step by dispatching the very first memo to the governor who graciously gave approval unfortunately, she could not be a part of the next edition of the project. She transited to the great beyond. May her kind soul find mercy with her God.
The ministry of education under Dr Okai also successfully obtained approval and showed great enthusiasm at the Grand finale, but did not partake in the next episode; there was a change of occupancy in Luggard House.
Dr. Toloruleke, the next commissioner, loved K-WAEC so much he did not only
