Former Gov. Mimiko: Massive Investment in Education, Health,  Needed to Curb Poverty

Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, former Governor of Ondo State, speaking as the guest speaker at the maiden convocation of Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH), advocated massive investment in Nigeria’s education and health sectors as the key to tackling poverty and boosting human development.

He added that, alongside these investments, decentralising the Nigerian Police is essential to resolving insecurity.

The convocation’s theme, “Ill health and illiteracy, siblings alliance against development,” framed his remarks.

Mimiko highlighted grim statistics: Nigeria remains the worst place to give birth, life expectancy is low, and out‑of‑pocket health expenditure stood at 76 % in 2022.

While criticising the timing and methods of fuel subsidy removal for worsening inflation, he praised the introduction of NELFUND and urged continued focus on these priority areas.
