Journalists engaged in investigative environmental Journalism have been advised to ensure that they determine their sources of information before rushing to the press.
Taiwo Adebayo, a media expert in investigative environmental reporting, made the disclosure at a 2 day Environmental Journalism training organized for Journalists
from Kogi, Benue, FCT, Kwara and Niger States holding at Dangote Academy, Obaja, Kogi State.
The Journalism workshop organized by Dangote Group of Company, with CAMIC as Media partner aims at strengthening and broadening the horizon of Journalists towards effective reporting the environment for sustainability.
Mr. Adebayo while making presentation on Investigative environmental Journalism, urge practitioners to ensure that they determine the competences of their sources of information, urged that investigative environmental reporting should be evidenced based.
While pointing out that all evidences used in investigative environmental Journalism must be backed up with documents or multimedia materials, Mr. Adebayo cautioned Journalists against relying only on oral claims.
Mr. Adebayo urged practitioners to avoid single sources reporting, conduct independent verification, pointing out that truth should be the motivation for investigative environmental reporting.
The Media expert warned journalists against being used in the course of writing investigative environmental reporting, described a journalist as good as his sources of information.
Mr. Adebayo concluded by cautioning against the use of perception by practitioners, urged for consultation with other sources, advocated thorough research on environmental issues before reporting, said speaking with experts, leads to extensive reporting, strengthens copy, helps journalists from running foul of defamation suits.
