
Dr Abbas Yahaya Commends Federal Government on NEWMAP-EIB Launching

The Federal Government of Nigeria has launched the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project *(NEWMAP)* in collaboration with the European Investment Bank ( *EIB* ). The event took place in Abuja, marking a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to address environmental degradation and promote sustainable development. The event was attended by notable leaders across the nation including Ministers, Kogi State Governor and other Governors and other top Government officers.
The Kogi State Project Coordinator for the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project ( *NEWMAP* ) *Dr Abbas Yahaya* has expressed heartfelt commendation to the Federal Government, led by His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and the Ministry of Environment for the successful launch of the NEWMAP-EIB project.
In his statement *Dr Abbas* said this landmark initiative underscores the government’s unwavering commitment to addressing the pressing issues of environmental degradation, erosion, and flooding that have plagued communities across Nigeria, including Kogi State. The *NEWMAP-EIB* project promises to bring tangible benefits to affected communities, enhancing their resilience to environmental challenges and improving their livelihoods and the project will focus on watershed management and infrastructure development, livelihood support and economic empowerment and capacity building and institutional strengthening.
*Dr Abbas* further expressed the expected to benefit millions of Nigerians, particularly in rural communities, by: Enhancing food security and agricultural productivity, improving access to clean water and sanitation and reducing poverty and promoting economic growth
*Dr Abbas* praised the President’s visionary leadership and the Minister of Environment’s tireless efforts in driving this critical project. He also appreciates the Government of Kogi State especially the Governor of the state His Excellency *Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo* for his commitment in making Kogi State a better and safe place for all.
In his conclusion *Dr Abbas* noted that the project will not only mitigate the impacts of erosion and flooding but also promote sustainable development and environmental management in Kogi State and *NEWMAP-EIB* project is expected to have a positive impact on the lives of millions of Nigerians, particularly in rural communities, by providing them with improved livelihood opportunities, enhanced environmental resilience, and better access to basic services.
