BISHOP DELISLE COLLEGE LOKOJA WINS KOGI APWEN 2026 GIRLS’ SCIENCE QUIZ WITH 14 POINTS

Bishop Delisle College, Lokoja, has emerged overall winner of the Kogi State Chapter of the 2026 Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria, APWEN, Inter-School Science Quiz Competition for Girls, after scoring 14 points in the grand finale held at the GYB Model Science Secondary School, Adankolo, Lokoja.

Saint Barnabas Secondary School, Kabba and Our Lady’s Secondary School, Anyigba finished joint second runners-up with 10 points each, while Queen of Apostles Secondary School, Okene placed third runner-up with 8 points.

The four schools qualified after preliminary rounds held across the three senatorial districts since March 2026. The finalists represented Kogi East, Kogi Central, Kogi West and Lokoja respectively.

Speaking at the event, the Kogi State Chairman of APWEN, Engr. Mrs. Cecilia Attah, described the competition as one of the association’s flagship initiatives to remove barriers, build confidence and grow girls’ interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, STEM.

She said APWEN, a division of the Nigerian Society of Engineers inaugurated in 1983, is committed to increasing awareness that engineering is a career for girls, strengthening the number of female engineers and encouraging professionalism. She added that through mentorship, advocacy and competitions, APWEN is working to raise the profile of women in engineering and promote STEM education for girls.

“The vision behind this quiz competition is to encourage female engineers to be catalysts for advancement in the engineering profession and to contribute to national and global technological development,” she stated.

She congratulated all the finalists and urged the students to consider engineering, describing the profession as rewarding.

The State Chairman of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Engr. Emmanuel Adamu, commended the resilience of women engineers and urged them to serve as mentors for young girls. He said increased female participation in engineering will drive technological growth and produce future leaders committed to development.

The Leader of the Kabba-Bunu Legislative Council, Hon. Olufunke, also assured the students of support to pursue engineering careers and urged them not to see the profession as one reserved for men.

APWEN Kogi State Chapter was inaugurated in 2019, with Engr. Mrs. Cecilia Attah serving as the fourth Chairman in the state.

The Inter-Schools Science Competition for Girls is designed to improve the long-term representation of women in engineering and STEM and to inspire more girls to take up careers that will shape Nigeria’s technological future.
