Akiti and the Juju Tree award winning and best selling author, calls for integration of local culture, history into curriculum

Best selling and award winning author, Bolaji Ajayi, has called for the integration of local culture and history into the curriculum in a more engaging way, particularly in Nigeria and other developing countries.
She said that too often, children are educated using systems and content that don’t reflect their realities or heritage.
Ajayi said: “I want to see more educational materials—whether textbooks, digital tools, or storybooks—rooted in local narratives and traditions. By incorporating our folklore, heroes, and history into the learning process, we can make education more relatable and inspiring for young learners.”
Speaking in an interview with Thenigerianpost.com.ng on Wednesday, on her new book, titled “Akiti the Hunter Part III: Akiti and the Juju Tree,” she stated that the book continues the exciting adventures of her former book: Akiti, the first African superhero, as he faces one of his greatest challenges yet—the legendary Juju Tree.
She explained that this mystical tree holds great power and is tied to both the destiny of Akiti and his daughter, Nadia.
According to her, in this installment, the book explores the themes of love, courage, sacrifice, and resilience, particularly focusing on the father-daughter bond between Akiti and Nadia.
She stated that it is a thrilling story set within the rich tapestry of African folklore, which she has always been passionate about showcasing.
Ajayi said: “In this book, Akiti is forced to make decisions that test his values and his connection to family. At the same time, Nadia’s role in the story grows as she becomes more involved in the adventure. Together, they must work through ancient challenges and mysteries to protect their homeland. My goal with this book is to tell a story that is not only action-packed but also one that resonates emotionally with readers, both young and old.”
The best selling author said that writing children’s books, specifically with African roots, has always been close to her heart.
“I wanted to create stories that not only entertain but also empower young readers, particularly those who rarely see themselves represented in mainstream media. Growing up, I noticed there was a lack of African superheroes or positive figures in children’s literature. Many of the stories we consumed didn’t reflect our rich culture, values, or history.
“I decided to fill that gap by creating Akiti the Hunter, an African superhero who represents courage, strength, and leadership. Through Akiti, I want children—especially those of African descent—to see themselves as capable of greatness. But it goes beyond representation; I also wanted to introduce global readers to African folklore and traditions in a way that is fun, relatable, and educational. It’s about bridging cultures and fostering a deeper appreciation for the diversity of stories we tell.
“There is something magical about children’s books. They have the power to shape how young minds view themselves and the world. I decided to write kiddie books because I wanted to be a part of that magical experience, to give children the kind of stories that help them believe in themselves, understand their heritage, and dream big.”
Ajayi also canvassed for more technology-driven learning tools, especially in underserved areas in Nigeria.
According to her, while there’s a need to manage screen time, technology can also be a powerful tool to bridge gaps in education.
She opined that from interactive e-learning platforms to virtual classrooms, technology can help bring quality education to remote and disadvantaged communities.
For her, it would be good to see governments and private organizations invest in these innovations to ensure that every child, regardless of where they live, has access to quality education.
