A Valedictory Eulogy for Professor Durotimi Olayemi Akinwumi, Outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Federal University Lokoja
Today, I stand to celebrate the end of a tenure; to honor an era. I celebrate a man whose leadership redefined courage, vision, and service in the annals of the Federal University Lokoja—Professor Durotimi Olayemi Akinwumi.
Professor Akinwumi stands tall among the rare breed of Nigerian professors who are not intimidated by visibly daunting and seemingly impossible situations. His legacy is deeply etched in bold decisions that many feared to contemplate, let alone execute. Chief among these was his audacious resolve to relocate the university from the congested mini campus at Adankolo to the permanent site at Felele—at a time when the terrain was porous, unsafe, and widely regarded as uninhabitable.
To many staff, students, and observers, the move felt impossible. Fear was loud. Doubt was widespread. Even after the relocation, murmurs persisted—voices longing to return to Adankolo, much like the Israelites who yearned for Egypt despite their deliverance. Yet, Professor Akinwumi stood firm. With a stern, unwavering, and visionary resolve, he refused to turn back. That bold stand became the foundation upon which the thriving Felele campus we enjoy today was built.
True leadership does not stop at taking a stand—it follows through with action. Professor Akinwumi not only insisted on remaining at the permanent site; he transformed it. Under his leadership, Felele became not just a location, but a livable, functional, and dignified academic environment. Infrastructure was developed, facilities were put in place, and the campus was equipped with what was necessary to make it truly habitable and worthy of a federal university.
In another historic feat, he broke long-standing barriers by reopening the previously abandoned school hostel. This was a decision many had feared for years, but his courage once again prevailed—bringing relief, safety, and accommodation to students who desperately needed it.
Beyond infrastructure, Professor Akinwumi’s leadership was deeply human. He opened doors of employment with fairness and integrity, ensuring that opportunities were accessible regardless of background. I stand as a living testimony—one of the beneficiaries who gained employment without inducement, influence, or compromise. That alone speaks volumes about his commitment to justice and merit.
Academically, his tenure witnessed remarkable progress. He ensured the creation and accreditation of numerous academic programmes, including the highly significant and recently accredited Medical Programme—a milestone that has positioned the university for greater national relevance and impact.
Many times, one is tempted to wonder: Is Professor Akinwumi merely human, or an angel in human form? Despite the weight of his office, he remained profoundly humble. One could see him, cap in hand, seeking partnerships and investments—not for personal gain, but solely for the advancement and needs of the institution. Nationally and internationally, he pursued opportunities that would lift the university higher.
It is therefore almost laughable when some claim he has not done enough, or attempt to point accusing fingers at perceived shortcomings. But such criticism is not strange. Even our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, despite all He did, was still criticized. Greatness will always attract scrutiny.
As the clock ticks steadily toward the end of your tenure, Professor Akinwumi, I pray that your days be long and your relevance in the larger society continues to blossom. You will never be stranded in life. Your life shall become a storehouse where heavenly virtues are displayed for all to see.
Personally and collectively, we say thank you. We love you deeply. I will continue to pray for you, Professor, for your love, your sacrifices, and your immeasurable impact on my life and on this institution. You will be greatly missed—but your legacy will remain indelible.
