Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, a seasoned global energy executive and founding Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), has thrown his hat into the ring as a presidential aspirant.
With a remarkable blend of private and public sector experience, Olawepo-Hashim is touted as a contender who can deliver on his campaign promises.
A successful entrepreneur with a 30-year track record, Olawepo-Hashim has chaired several companies, including Oilworld Ltd., Transnational Energy Limited, and Bresson A.S. Limited. His leadership roles have spanned the energy sector, with interests in oil exploration and power production.
Olawepo-Hashim’s leadership qualities were evident from his school days. He was Health Prefect and President of the Dramatic Society at Cherubim and Seraphim College, and later, General Secretary of the Anti-Apartheid Association at the School of Basic Studies.
His activism led to his incarceration under the Detention of Persons Decree in 1989, earning him recognition as a Prisoner of Conscience by Amnesty International.
A Christian from a multicultural background, Olawepo-Hashim was born in Yelwa, Kebbi State, to a Yoruba mother and Hausa father. He has a Master’s degree in Global Affairs from the University of Buckingham, UK, where he was best student in his cohort.
Olawepo-Hashim’s political career includes roles in the National Democratic Party and the PDP. He was a key figure in the G-34 initiative, which led to the formation of political parties in Nigeria. As PDP’s founding Deputy National Publicity Secretary, he advocated for internal democracy and good governance.
Described as principled, courageous, and charismatic, Olawepo-Hashim has received several awards, including the Kwame Nkrumah African Leadership Award and the Veteran Award by the International Union of Students and World Federation of Democratic Youths.
