A Look at Cosmas Atabor’s Accomplishments as 7th Assembly Marks End of Second Legislative Session


 

As the 7th Kogi State House of Assembly marks the end of the second legislative session, here is a look at some of the accomplishments of the lawmaker representing Igalamela/Odolu Constituency, Hon. (Barr.) Cosmas Ilemona Atabor in his first two years in office._

*Lawmaking*
On this front, no Igalamela/Odolu lawmaker has ever been visibly more active, highly competent, passionately committed and very consistent.

*_Year One_*

Appointed Chairman, House Committee on Judiciary and Justice and member of several others.

Sponsored a Private Member Bill for a law to establish the Magistrates Courts for Kogi State.

Signed the draft Bill of the Nigeria/Korea Friendship Institute to be considered for passage on the floor of the house.

Involved the state judiciary to add solidity to his private member bill for a law to establish the Magistrates Courts for Kogi State.

Moved a motion for the establishment of Primary Healthcare Centre at Oko-Akpa Ajitata (adopted).

*_Year Two_*

Appointed in nine House Committees.

He retained his chairmanship of the House Committee on Judiciary and Justice for a second year in a row and was named member of House Committee on Education,
Science and Technology;
Petitions and Human Right;
Ethics Privileges; Government House Administration and Governor Office; Special Duties and Legislative Compliance; Finance, Budget and Economy Planning; Physical Planning, Urban and Regional Development; and Youths, Sports; Social Development; and SDGs.

His Private Member Bill for a law to establish the Magistrates Courts for Kogi State was passed by the House.

On Wednesday 19th of August, 2020, he laid Committee Reports of the following bills before the Assembly:

Committee Report 12: Report of Joint Committee on Finance and Judiciary on a Bill for A Law to Establish the Kogi State Mortgage Board and to regulate Mortgage Institutions, Foreclosure and enforcement in Real Property, and for other connected purposes, 2020.

Committee Report 13:
Report of Joint Committee on Commerce and Industry and Judiciary on a Bill for a Law to Repeal and Re-enact the Kogi State Public Procurement Law, 2014 Establishing the State Council on Public Procurement and the State Bureau of Public Procurement and other matters connected therewith, 2020.

Committee Report 10:
A Bill for a Law to provide for the Establishment of the Confluence University of Science and Technology, Osara, Kogi State and for other matters connected therewith, 2020 (all bills were passed by the House).

Working tirelessly with other legislators to ensure the passage of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) bill before the state House of Assembly.

*Constituency Support Initiatives*

*_Year One_*

Initiated his Education Support Scheme to cater for (some) educational needs of less privileged students in his constituency.

Initiated his Business Support Scheme to aide the growth of struggling small scale businesses.

Attracted UBEC/SUBEB Intervention Projects to his constituency, including construction of 2 Classrooms, Office and Store in the following Primary schools: LGEA primary school Ajodanwu, LGEA primary school, Agbokete, LGEA primary school Ekwuloko, LGEA primary school Ukanwili and LGEA primary school Otobo Ajaja.

Attracted the construction of 2 Classrooms, Office and Store in ECCDE: ECCDE School Ogboligo, renovation of LGEA primary school Agbokete (4 Classrooms), LGEA primary school Ayah (2 Classrooms), LGEA primary school Ibochi (3 classroomsoffice and store), LGEA primary school Iyegwu(2 classrooms), LGEA primary school Oforachi (3 Classrooms) and LGEA primary school Ukanwili (2 classrooms).

Payment of medical bills for constituents in medical emergencies.

Financed the grading of Imere-Ajaka road.

Worked in close proximity to other political office holders, traditional rulers stakeholders and security agencies to foster peace and harmonious coexistence in his constituency.

Distributed relief materials to victims of flooding within Igalamela/Odolu local government and students of Kogi State Polytechnic Lokoja.

Drew the attention of the Kogi State Project Coordinator, Nigerian Erosion and Watershed Management Project, Lokoja to the devastating erosion challenges in his constituency.

Moved a motion (adopted by the House) for the establishment of Primary Healthcare Centre at Oko-Akpa Ajitata to cater for a population of over eighteen thousand people in a cluster of communities including Oko-Akpa Ajitata, Ojiama, Achejuenwu, Ofe-Agba, Ogichi, Ojiama, Ojiapata and Etitu-Owe.

Donated three cows to three (selected) Christian groups for Christmas celebration.

Distributed rice and chicken to Christians for the celebration of Christmas.

Distributed rams and rice
to Muslim Leaders and party stakeholders across the constituency for the celebration of Eid-el-Kabir.

Cash empowerment to women and youths (selected) within the constituency.

Distribution of exercise books to (selected) students and schools across the words of the constituency.

Cash payments to indigent students (31 persons ) of Igalamela/Odolu Local government in various school across Nigeria.

Payment of JAMB/UTME fees for 50 candidates of the local government.

Donations to public spirited youths groups.

Influenced hitch free screening of constituent political appointees before the House of Assembly.

Donated face masks and hand sanitizers during the outbreak of covid 19.

*_Year Two_*

Influenced the constitution of a high profile delegation of members of the KGHA to inspect gully erosion sites including: Ikare-Ojokuta road, Ayikpele-Okpe-Imere, Ibochi-Ikelegwu-Aya road, LGEA (NA) Primary School and Emachi Road (Ajaka).

Colaborated with the Commissioner for Transportation in sponsoring training kits for all the 21 Igalamela/Odolu Police Constabulary Trainees undergoing training at the Police Training School, Ilorin, Kwara state

Through his Education Support Scheme, he financed the payment of tuition fees for students in different tertiary institutions.

Sponsored the payment of JAMB/UTME registration fees for candidates from his constituency.

Offered cash support to selected constituents to cushion the effects of covid19.

Supported hundreds of constituents in securing admissions into various tertiary institutions.

Issued several letters of recommendation to constituents to ease job acquisition to constituents.

Ensured adequate constituents representation in various government social investment schemes.

Donated educational materials and monthly stipends to students (selected) from his constituency.

Cash empowerment to women and youths through his Business Support Grant.

Donated to (selected) Muslims and Christians during religious celebrations.

Payment of medical bills for constituents in medical emergencies.

Donated to several socio-cultural organizations and religious groups.

Ensured smooth screening process of government appointees appointees from his constituency before the House.

Working closely with other government officials, traditional rulers, community leaders and youths and law enforcement agencies to sustain peace, harmony and security within his constituency.

Recipient of several prestigious awards.

Conferred traditional title of Atama Onu-Ife (Dooga) by the Onu-Ife, Chief Boniface Musa.
