A Journey of Discovery: My IVLP Experience in the United States

As a participant in the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) with the theme: Promoting Social Change Through the Arts (A Multi-Regional Project consisting of 22 Countries), I had the distinct privilege of embarking on a transformative journey across the United States, visiting Washington, D.C., Virginia, Ohio, Florida, and New York.
This prestigious program, organized by the U.S. Department of State, provided an unparalleled opportunity to engage with American society, its institutions, and its people.
Washington, D.C.: A Hub of Culture and Diplomacy
Our journey began in the nation’s capital, where we met with the Office of International Visitors and the U.S. Department of State, setting the tone for a deep dive into American diplomacy. The American Councils for International Education and the Capital Communications Group provided valuable perspectives on educational exchanges, media relations and the U.S Federalism.
Cultural immersion was a key aspect of our Washington visit. At the J.F. Kennedy Center and the National Endowment for the Arts, we discussed the intersection of arts and public policy. Visits to the National Museum of African American History and Culture, Smithsonian American Art Museum, and Arena Stage highlighted the rich tapestry of American art and its role in societal reflection and change. Engaging with One Journey and the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library reinforced the importance of social justice and community activism.
Virginia: Honoring Heritage and Artistic Expression
In Virginia, the Jefferson School of African American Heritage Center provided a profound understanding of African American history and its cultural significance. The Fralin Museum of Art and the Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection expanded our appreciation for diverse artistic expressions and the preservation of cultural heritage.
Ohio: Community Engagement and Artistic Innovation
Ohio showcased the power of community and artistic innovation. Proyecto Letras, The Lippman School, and Pangea Theatre Partnership demonstrated how arts and education can drive social change. QU in Recovery-QU Theatre and the Distinguished Gentlemen of the Spoken Word highlighted the therapeutic and transformative power of performance art.
The Cleveland Jazz Orchestra and The Pivot Center for Art, Dance, and Expression illustrated Ohio’s vibrant arts scene. The famous Home Hospitality experience allowed us to connect with American families, providing a personal insight into their lives and traditions.
Florida: Empowering Youth Through the Arts
In Miami, the Miami 4 Social Change Youth Film Festival and Guitars Over Guns showcased initiatives that empower youth through creative expression and mentorship. ECOCultura’s work highlighted the integration of cultural activities with environmental advocacy, demonstrating the multifaceted impact of community-based arts programs.
New York: The Pinnacle of Artistic Advocacy
Our journey culminated in New York City, a global epicenter of culture and advocacy. The Broadway Advocacy Coalition and Groundswell Community Mural Project illustrated how art can be a powerful tool for social justice. Visits to the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and Powerhouse Arts provided insights into contemporary art and innovative artistic practices.
Engagements with the Center for Artistic Activism emphasized the strategic use of art in activism, underscoring the city’s role as a leader in cultural advocacy.
Reflections on the IVLP Experience
The IVLP experience was a journey of discovery, learning, and cultural exchange. Each city and organization we visited contributed to a broader understanding of how art, education, and diplomacy intersect to foster global understanding and cooperation. The diverse interactions highlighted the importance of preserving cultural heritage, promoting social justice, and empowering communities through creative expression.
This experience has equipped me with invaluable insights and reinforced my commitment to leveraging arts and cultural exchange in my work. The connections made and the knowledge gained will be instrumental in driving positive change within my community and beyond.
I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the U.S Mission in Nigeria, U.S. Department of State, the participating organizations, my fellow IVLP participants for making this journey unforgettable. This is to also acknowledge Writers Interactive Network, KPMG West Africa who gave me the wings and supported be in every possible way to aim for the top as this experience has not only broadened my professional horizons but also deepened my appreciation for the transformative power of cultural diplomacy and foster a people-to-people diplomacy.
Here are a few highlights from my IVLP experience
Building Connections: Connecting with diverse individuals from various backgrounds and cultures was truly enriching. The exchange of ideas, perspectives, and experiences has broadened my understanding of global issues and strengthened my network of contacts.
Learning Opportunities: Participating in seminars, workshops, and site visits provided valuable insights into best practices, innovative approaches, and emerging trends in my field. I return home with a wealth of knowledge and new skills to apply to my work.
Personal Growth: The IVLP challenged me to step out of my comfort zone, embrace cultural differences, and develop a greater appreciation for diversity. It has empowered me to become a more effective leader and advocate for positive change in my community.
