CAN decries killing of Ebonyi indigenes in Anambra, demands justice for victims

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Ebonyi State chapter has condemned in a strong terms the gruesome murder of over 13 Ebonyi indigenes in Ogboji, Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State on June 30, 2025.
The Christian body made the condemnation while interacting with journalists on Thursday in Abakaliki, the State capital.
The State CAN chairman Rev. Dr. Scamb Nwokolo who described the massacre of the armless and harmless Ebonyi indigenes as a heinous crime against God and humanity, wondered how the gunmen stormed a peaceful meeting of Ebonyians and opened fire on them, killing at least 13 and injured several others.
According to him “How could any sane person contemplate such a heinous crime—invading a group of harmless and armless people in their lawful meeting to perpetrate such brutal murder without recourse to morality, law, or the sanctity of life?”
“CAN in Ebonyi State vehemently condemns this dastardly act and wishes to state emphatically that it is a heavy crime against God and humanity which must attract both divine and secular punishment in line with the biblical injunction in the gospel of Mathew chapter 26 verse 52 which states that those who lived by the sword shall die by the sword”
“While we commiserate with the Government and entire good people of Ebonyi State, we deeply empathised with the bereaved families of the devious and unwarranted attack and prayed God to grant them divine strength to bear the unfortunate loss”
The CAN boss further called on Anambra State Government and security agencies to do everything within its powers to ensure perpetrators of such dastardly act are brought to book.
Also speaking, Rev. Dr. Joseph Nwibo CAN Vice-Chairman, urged calm, stressing the need for thorough investigation while commending Ebonyi youths for their restraint despite provocation. “We must allow law enforcement agencies to investigate and reveal the truth,” he advised.
The CAN Secretary, Rev. Fr. Joseph Origbo, emphasized that the coordination and scale of the killings indicated a premeditated act. “This kind of mass murder is planned. The blood of the innocent cries out, and this must not be swept under the carpet,” he concluded
