KOSCEPA Engages Non-Nigerian Merchants to Enhance Cashew Industry
The Kogi State Commodity Exchange, Export Promotion and Market Development Agency, in alignment with the Chief Servant’s Vision, His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Kogi State, Alh. Ahmed Usman Ododo recently convened a significant consultative meeting with several non-Nigerian merchants who are actively engaged in the cashew business within the state. This pivotal meeting aimed to foster collaboration among stakeholders and create a comprehensive and robust framework for the sustainable development of Kogi’s burgeoning cashew industry.
During the meeting, the Director General, Hon. Adewale Victor Omofaiye of the Kogi State Commodity Exchange, Export Promotion and Market Development Agency articulated the government’s steadfast commitment to creating and maintaining an enabling environment that facilitates smooth and effective business operations. Recognizing the unique expertise and resources that the foreign merchants bring, the Director General warmly invited them to bring their advanced equipment and cutting-edge technologies to Kogi State. This strategic initiative is intended to enhance value addition processes that are crucial for significantly improving local employment opportunities. The government believes that by integrating these modern practices, local farmers will benefit directly, leading to job creation for the local populace and empowering them economically. This initiative also aims to tackle the persistent issue of middlemen who have historically impacted the profitability of cashew farmers, thereby directly benefiting the grassroots level.
In an open dialogue during the meeting, the foreign merchants took the opportunity to express their concerns regarding the business environment. They appealed to the agency to address the pressing challenge of multiple taxation, which they identified as a substantial barrier to efficient and profitable business operations. Furthermore, they highlighted the urgent necessity for the development of an inland port in Kogi State. The establishment of such infrastructure would be instrumental in enhancing logistics, facilitating transportation, and ensuring the seamless movement of their commodities from production points to markets, ultimately supporting the growth of the entire cashew sector.
