The Honourable Member Representing Yagba Federal Constituency Hon. Leke Abejide was one of the recipients of the Honorary Award of Excellence at the grand finale of the Nigerian Union of Journalist Kogi State Chapter’s press week for the year 2021 as the *”Icon of Grassroots Emancipation”.*
At the NUJ’s press week finale, Hon. Abejide who was ably represented by his Chief of Staff, Chief Samuel Adebola Gaddafi at the event in Lokoja the state capital received the award of excellence on his behalf.
The Chief of Staff also delivered the keynote speech on behalf of Hon. Leke Abejide at the event which was centred on the ” Electoral act and the Future of Nigeria’s Democracy”. He acknowledged the struggle of the Nigerian Union of Journalists and many of their involvements during the colonial era to date, stating that many members of the NUJ have faced different assaults during the process of their careers as journalists.
“Today, looking at the future of Nigeria’s democracy and electoral process we have more to do, although, INEC is the umpire of our electoral system and the body is still being built. The electoral act is central to successful elections, but it is far from being perfect, it would therefore be seen that the NUJ Kogi State Chapter has set itself the novel task to work together with the independent body to achieve more successes”.
“As a progressive democrat, I have a strong conviction that electronic voting and transfer of results will give more credibility to our electoral system, this I stand with, alongside the majority of my colleagues in the green chamber,” he said.
While appreciating their choice of theme for this year’s NUJ week, saying, this is the best gift the journalists can give the Nigerian people whom they are defending.
He appreciated the privilege and the honour bestowed on him as a recipient of the award of excellence as the Icon of Grassroots Emancipation. Chief Samuel Adebola who received the award on behalf of Hon. Leke assured the NUJ Kogi state chapter of the unwavering support of Hon. Abejide, saying he will continue to be their teaming partner in the growth of our democracy.
