The age long systematic and obnoxious practice of segregation and discrimination of women in all the echelons of political and social leadership is eroded into oblivion in kogi state by the administration of His Excellency Alhaji Yahaya Bello. A combination of persistent advancement have birthed a great enlightenment which have paved way for the modern dispensation of political liberty for women which now guarantees us the freedom to exercise our political rights such as voting in an election and eligibility to stand for election without any form of discrimination.
A fleeting glance at the history book will snow us how we women were once treated more or less like slaves having been objectified as man’s property. We were so disregarded to the extent that we were never considered as having the requisite skills and the mental faculty to hold any leadership position both at home and in the social settings except in the kitchen and the bed room. In a nutshell, we were treated as one who had no significant values necessary to influence human, economic and socio-political developments.
However, the place and the role of women in our immediate society have changed remarkably in the past century especially in kogi state with Alhaji Yahaya Bello where the secretary to state Government is a woman, the head of service is a woman, we have women as commissioner, special advisers, we have women as vice chairmen of the 21 local government council in the state, we have women as head of all local government legislative council and we also 84 female wards Councillor. No longer are women associated with low expectations both in education, workforce and political field.
Now, as the 2023 presidential election in Nigeria gets closer, the vast population of women in the country would be presented with another glorious opportunity to correct the mistakes of the past years by ensuring that we speak with one voice at the poll this time around.
The ball is now in the court of women and what we choose to do with it will determine whether there will be positive change in the way our women are treated in the National political sphere or the unimpressive status quo will persist.
Available data clearly give women the advantageous population which they can always wield to our favour since the cardinal principle of democracy tilts towards the majority. Therefore, l call on different women groups in our Country to work in synergy and assume their status as kingmaker and make their own,
His Excellency Alhaji Yahaya Bello the next President of Nigeria come 2023.
I pray for more grace upon him. May God bless him with a greater Divine mandate to bring, peace, and love to the Nigeria. May He be blessed with good health, greater wisdom, and many more years of fruitful service.
