Covid-19 2nd Wave: Kogi Will Not Close Down Schools- Commissioner

Kogi State Government says it is not planning to shutdown schools as the Second Wave of Covid-19 continues in the country.

Commissioner of Education, Science and Technology, Mr. Wemi Jones made this know while speaking with Newsmen shortly after presenting food items and cash to Officials of the All Progressives Congress APC at Ayede Bunu in Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area.

Nigerian Government had announced shut down of schools early this year and other public places as a result of the Corona Virus pandemic outbreak as a measure to control the spread of the disease.

Due to the second wave of the virus, some State governments have announced ban on Public gatherings.

But the Kogi State Commissioner of Education, Science and Technology, Mr. Wemi Jones said the first wave of Covid-19 brought a lot of set back to the State education sector despite the fact that Kogi is Corona Virus free.

He said the State cannot afford to jeopardize education in Kogi State, hence the plan not to close down schools again.

The Commissioner explained that despite challenges posed by the virus, the State has recorded remarkable progress in the sector with the Education law, Confluence University of Science and Technology as well as budgetary allocation of twenty percent to the education sector among others already put in place.

He commended Governor Yahaya Bello for the confidence reposed in him, promising not to disappoint him.

Mr. Wemi Jones said the distribution of the food items and cash was a way of giving back to the people who have trusted him to lead them.

The acting Chairman of APC in Kabba/Bunu, Mr. Elisha Olorunmosunle expressed satisfaction with the performance of the Commissioner since assumption of office in January this year, describing the gesture as first of its kind.

Items distributed include, rice, noddles, seasoning and cash among others.
