GHICF Awards 74 Scholarships, Donates 1,820 Textbooks to Kogi Schools

The Global Health and Indigent Care Foundation (GHICF) has increased its tertiary scholarship beneficiaries from 47 last year to 74 and donated 1,820 textbooks to public secondary schools in Ayetoro Gbede, Kogi State.

The President/CEO of the Foundation, Dr. Samuel Oloyo, disclosed this at the 2026 Scholarship and Educational Assistance Programme (SEAP) ceremony in the community.

Dr. Oloyo, represented by the Secretary of SEAP committee, Mr. Richard Akanmode said the 57 per cent increase in beneficiaries, who are studying medicine, nursing, pharmacy, engineering, computer science, agriculture and other courses, stretched the Foundation’s budget, forcing an adjustment in individual award amounts to accommodate more qualified students.

He also announced a new textbook intervention for four schools in Ayetoro Gbede namely; Community High School, Government Secondary School and Universal Basic Education Schools 1 and 2 – to address shortage of learning materials.

“In the first phase, 1,820 textbooks in English and Mathematics will be supplied to junior and senior secondary students under a school-based management system to allow reuse by successive sets.

Dr. Oloyo, who said the Foundation was set up after seeing intelligent children drop out of school for lack of funds, commended the SEAP Committee led by Mr. Richard Olonishuwa and Mr. Richard Akanmode for its transparency and diligence.

According to him, the books would be managed through a school-based system so that successive generations of students could use them.

He added that the Foundation hoped to extend the scheme to other subjects, particularly the sciences, as resources permit.

He urged principals and teachers to cooperate, warning that textbooks alone would not guarantee academic success.

“Dedicated teaching, effective school administration, student discipline, and parental involvement are equally essential,” he said.

He also charged beneficiaries to aim high and give back to society, and urged parents to remain involved in their children’s education.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the SEAP Committee, Mr. Richard Olonishuwa noted that the Sponsors of the Programme, Dr. Oloyo and wife spend #100 million in the last five years.

According to him, the scholarship and educational support are aimed at promoting healthy competitions among students and enhanced STEM-based.

He charged the Leadership of the benefiting schools to ensure that the books are used for the purpose intended and advised the Tertiary Institution beneficiaries to take their studies seriously.

In his remarks, the Olu of Ayetoro, Oba Sunday Adewumi Ologe commended the philanthropy gesture of Dr. Oloyo and his wife, describing them as blessings to the community.

Oba Ologe, who was represented by Chief Samson Arowosafe applauded the transparency and accountability of the organising Committee and charged the beneficiaries to take their studies seriously.

On his part, the National President of Ayetoro Gbede Development Union, Mr. Samuel Olorunmaiye said the community is grateful for the intervention of the Foundation, saying their investment will stand the test of time.

Speaking on behalf of the Students, Olonilebi Winner, a Student of Mechanical Department, Federal University Lokoja described the intervention as timely, saying it will cushion the effect of the economic quagmire.
