The Throne Of The Confluence: HRH Alh. Dr. Ibrahim Kabir Maikarfi IV, The Monarch Who Raised The Bar Of Royalty
By Abu Micheal

There are traditional rulers and there are traditional rulers.
HRH Alh. Dr. Ibrahim Gambo Kabir Maikarfi IV, the revered Maigari of Lokoja and Chairman of the Lokoja Local Government Traditional Council, belongs to that rare breed whose candour, humility and depth have given new meaning to the ancient stool.
Tactful, unassuming, slow to anger and swift to chide, he is a fine gentleman schooled in both Western and Islamic knowledge, a technocrat turned custodian, whose reign has been peace personified.
Born on December 2, 1964 into the illustrious Maikarfi dynasty, he is the fourth in an unbroken royal line. He is the senior son of late HRH Alh. Dr. Muhammadu Kabiru Maikarfi III, grandson of Alhaji Yahaya Muhammadu Maikarfi II and great-grandson of Muhammadu Maikarfi I.
His mother, the late Hajiya Ummul-Kulsum Kabir Maikarfi, an Igala princess from Idah, made his very blood a symbol of the unity Lokoja preaches, a mini Nigeria where rivers and races meet.
He began with Qur’anic education as tradition demands of royalty, attended Ma’ahadi LSMB Primary School Lokoja, Government Technical Secondary School New Bussa, and Kaduna Polytechnic where he earned a National Diploma and Higher National Diploma in Mining Engineering and a Post Graduate Diploma in Management Sciences.
A chartered manager, he served meritoriously in the Kogi State Ministry of Solid Minerals and rose through the ranks at the Corporate Affairs Commission in Abuja to Senior Manager before destiny called him to the throne of his forefathers on January 8, 2024.
That rich background explains his royalty. He does not proclaim royalty, royalty proclaims him.
A true traditional ruler must be the custodian of culture, the keeper of peace, the father of all, the bridge between the governed and government, the voice of the voiceless and the conscience of the community, and HRH Maikarfi IV embodies them all.
He is accessible, his palace doors remain open to the talakawas, to the high and low, to Christians and Muslims, to indigenes and settlers.
He is just and fair, resolving family, land and communal disputes not by coercion but by dialogue, mediation and alternative dispute resolution.
He is detribalized and non-partisan, a man who as he himself says believes that religion and ethnicity should not be a barrier, and that accepting everyone as his own is the secret of unity.
He is wise and patient, not given to frivolities but thoughtful in counsel, modern yet deeply rooted, a globally exposed administrator who respects ancient tradition.
This is how a traditional ruler galvanizes his people, and this is exactly what he has done since ascending the throne.
He has deliberately united Lokoja’s Oworo, Nupe, Hausa, Bassa-Nge, Yoruba, Igala and all settler communities under one umbrella of peace.
He has restored pride to title holders, revived communal conversations and placed youths and women at the centre of palace engagement.
Rather than elaborate fanfare to mark his first anniversary, he chose the path of service, visiting the Federal Teaching Hospital Lokoja, the State Specialist Hospital and Primary Health Centres at Angwa Yashi, Angwan Kura and Kabawa.
There, he donated drugs worth millions, consumables, footed the medical bills of the sick and distributed palliatives to the poor and vulnerable to cushion economic hardship.
His commitment to youth and human capital development has been equally visible through his efforts in facilitating employment for Lokoja youths in the Corporate Affairs Commission and other cadres, and his constant preaching that youths should be taught how to catch fish and not how to eat it.
He has also become a leading national voice advocating for constitutional roles for traditional rulers as custodians of culture and first level security intelligence, while improving interactions with royal fathers across Nigeria and beyond.
It was therefore no surprise when the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Kogi State Council, during its 2026 Press Week, honoured him with the Leadership Excellence Award, describing his reign as world class royalty with local impact.
In just a short time, he has elevated the dignity of Lokoja as Nigeria’s first capital, hosted the 165th anniversary of Lokoja’s founding with turbaning of new title holders, and fostered a productive synergy between the palace and the administration of Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo through his support for people focused governance.
He is a monarch who understands that a throne is not for show but for service, and he has raised the bar of the revered traditional institution with grace and equanimity.
In the words of Abu Micheal, President South South States residents of Lokoja and Special Adviser South South Mobilization to Gov. Usman Ahmed Ododo:
“Your Royal Highness, we thank you for all you have been doing for your talakawas. We truly appreciate your fatherly love, your quiet interventions, your prayers and your generosity.
May your reign be longer than that of your ancestors. May Almighty Allah protect you, guide you aright, grant you continuous promotion in honour, wisdom and good health, and keep Lokoja peaceful under your watch.
Long live the 4th Maikarfi. Long live the Maigari of Lokoja.”
