As Governor Bassey Edet Otu rounds off his three days working visit to the Northern Senatorial District of Cross River State, it is important to highlight one of the significant themes of the tour: the renewed commitment of his administration to the promotion of culture, tourism and the preservation of the state’s rich cultural heritage.
Under Governor Otu’s leadership, the Carnival Calabar has continued to expand, with the introduction of the Central Senatorial Carnival and Northern Senatorial Carnival, making the iconic festival more inclusive, expansive and representative of the cultural diversity of the entire state.
The administration has also placed greater emphasis on the development and funding of cultural festivals across Cross River. The Leboku New Yam Festival, for instance, has received significantly increased funding under the Otu administration, reportedly doubling the support provided by previous administrations.
This renewed commitment to culture and tourism was clearly demonstrated during the Governor’s three-day visit to the Northern Senatorial District, where he participated in and celebrated the traditional New Yam Festivals across the various Local Government Areas.
For the first time in the history of these festivals, the people of Ogoja, Obanliku, Obudu, Bekwarra and Yala had the rare opportunity of receiving the Governor and celebrating their respective New Yam Festivals with him.
Beyond the celebrations, Governor Otu’s presence sends a strong message about the value his administration places on the cultural identity and traditions of the people. It also signals a deliberate effort to reposition these festivals as platforms for tourism, cultural exchange, local enterprise and economic development.
As Governor Otu continues to throw his weight behind the tourism sector, the rich cultural festivals scattered across Cross River State are set to receive greater attention and support, unlocking their potential to attract visitors, create opportunities for local communities and further position Cross River as Nigeria’s leading tourism destination.
