The Edo State Waste Management Board, EWMB, in collaboration with the EWMB Academy, has taken its environmental awareness campaign to the Aduwawa Market community in Benin City, in another step toward building a cleaner, healthier and more environmentally responsible Edo State.
The Aduwawa outreach was aimed at sensitising market stakeholders on the importance of maintaining clean surroundings, proper waste disposal, patronising approved waste channels, and making cleanliness a shared responsibility.
A major highlight of the programme was the celebration of positive environmental behaviour. Rewards were presented to shops and market spaces that demonstrated commendable adherence to proper waste management and cleanliness practices.
According to the Board, the approach reinforces a critical message: environmental responsibility should not only be enforced, it should also be recognised, encouraged and rewarded.
The outreach was more than an awareness programme. It was a deliberate effort to take the message of proper waste management directly to markets, shops, schools and communities where everyday environmental practices begin.
At the heart of the initiative is the EWMB Academy, an innovative programme by the Managing Director of EWMB, Amb. Dr. Lucky Enehita-Inegbenehi. The Academy was established to take environmental education beyond the walls of the Board and into the grassroots.
Through the Academy, the Board is raising a new generation of environmentally conscious citizens by engaging students, traders, market leaders and communities with practical knowledge on waste disposal, cleanliness, personal responsibility and sustainable practices.
The success of the Aduwawa outreach reflects the Board’s commitment to building partnerships with communities and fostering a culture where cleanliness becomes a way of life rather than an occasional obligation.
The EWMB reaffirmed its commitment to the vision of a cleaner and healthier Edo State, and expressed appreciation to His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo, Executive Governor of Edo State, for his continued support for initiatives that promote a sustainable environment.
