Lokoja – Residents of Otokiti Housing Estate and adjoining communities in Lokoja, Kogi State, have expressed outrage over a prolonged power outage that has left the affected areas in darkness for more than a week, accusing the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) of failing to provide information on the cause of the blackout.
The residents said electricity supply to Otokiti Housing Estate, New Mami, parts of Zone 8 and surrounding communities was interrupted around midnight on Monday, July 20, 2026, and had yet to be restored as of Wednesday, July 29, 2026.
Many of the affected customers alleged that AEDC had not issued any official statement or public notice explaining the reason for the outage or indicating when electricity supply would be restored.
Speaking with our correspondent, a resident, who pleaded not to be named, condemned what he described as the “nonchalant attitude” of the electricity distribution company, particularly officials responsible for the Otokiti axis.
He said the prolonged blackout had inflicted severe economic hardship on households and small business owners, noting that large quantities of perishable food items stored in refrigerators and freezers had already been lost.
According to him, traders and entrepreneurs whose businesses depend on electricity have been forced to suspend operations, resulting in significant financial losses.
The resident further expressed concern that despite the extended outage, consumers might still receive estimated electricity bills at the end of the month, describing such a development as unfair to customers who had been without power for several days.
Residents have therefore appealed to the management of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company to urgently address the situation and restore electricity supply to the affected communities.
They also called on the relevant regulatory authorities to intervene and ensure improved service delivery, transparency and effective communication between the distribution company and its customers.
