By joshua Edo CSOs Hail Iyamu’s Appointment, Says Merit Must Drive Public Service

A coalition of civil society organisations in Edo State has thrown its weight behind the appointment of Mr. Iyamu Osaro Destiny (Culture) as Chairman of the Edo State Consumer Protection Committee, describing the decision by Governor Monday Okpebholo as a demonstration of merit-based leadership and inclusive governance.
In a joint statement issued on Friday, the groups said the appointment signalled the administration’s commitment to rewarding competence, dedication and service rather than political patronage or sectional interests.
The coalition argued that the decision had rekindled public confidence in governance, noting that it reflected a leadership style that prioritises capacity over sentiments. According to the groups, the appointment sends a strong message that hard work and proven ability remain relevant criteria for public service under the present administration.
The organisations commended Governor Okpebholo for what they described as the courage to look beyond political affiliations and entrenched interests in selecting a candidate they said possesses the experience and credibility required to lead the Consumer Protection Committee effectively.
They described Iyamu as a grassroots leader who has earned the trust of many through years of engagement with communities and public advocacy, expressing confidence that he would provide effective leadership in protecting the interests of consumers across the state.
The coalition also called on market associations, youth organisations, community leaders and other stakeholders to support the new chairman in the discharge of his responsibilities, stressing that broad-based collaboration would be critical to the committee’s success.
According to the statement, strengthening consumer protection is essential to promoting fair trade practices, improving public confidence in the marketplace and ensuring greater accountability in commercial transactions across Edo State.
The statement was jointly signed by Solomon Okoduwa, Executive Director of the Initiative for Youth Awareness on Migration, Immigration, Development and Reintegration (IYAMIDR); Comrade Wilfred Evbade, President of Youth Emancipation for Socio-Change; Ernest Asibor, State Coordinator of Edo Youth for Good Governance; Mrs. Elizabeth Tunde, President of Eliz United Forum; and Ms. Ajayi Shade of the Movement for Gender Equality.
The groups pledged their continued support for initiatives they believe will strengthen institutions, improve governance and advance the welfare of residents, while urging the new committee chairman to justify the confidence reposed in him through transparency, fairness and effective consumer advocacy.
