By joshua DEMOCRACY DAY: QS Aminu Abubakar Suleiman Calls for Credible Representation, Accountability in Kogi East
As Nigeria marks the 2026 Democracy Day, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) senatorial candidate for Kogi East, QS Aminu Abubakar Suleiman, has called for renewed commitment to democratic values, credible representation, and accountability in governance.
In a statement commemorating June 12, Suleiman described the occasion as a reminder of the courage displayed by Nigerians who, 33 years ago, exercised their civic rights in what remains one of the defining moments in the nation’s democratic history.
According to him, although the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election remains a painful chapter in Nigeria’s political journey, the ideals born from that struggle continue to shape the country’s democratic aspirations.
“Democracy is not the day of the election. It is every day after, in the chamber, in the constituency, and in the report rendered to the people,” he said.
The ADC candidate noted that, for the people of Kogi East, comprising the nine local government areas stretching from Ankpa and Bassa to Idah, Ibaji, Omala, and Olamaboro, the occasion represents more than a public holiday.
He described it as “a covenant renewed annually,” reminding leaders of their responsibility to earn public trust, govern with integrity, and remain accountable to the people.
Suleiman, a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (FNIQS), said his aspiration to represent Kogi East in the National Assembly is built on the principles of accessible leadership, responsible governance, and people oriented legislation.
He stressed that effective representation goes beyond election campaigns, noting that elected officials must maintain constant engagement with their constituents and remain visible after assuming office.
“Credible representation means showing up not only on election day but every sitting day of the Senate. People centred lawmaking means that bills sponsored in Abuja must reflect the real needs and concerns of communities across Kogi East,” he stated.
He further explained that the values of the ADC align with the ideals of June 12, particularly in promoting inclusive, transparent, and accountable leadership necessary for strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.
“The handshake symbol of the ADC is not merely a logo; it represents the bond of trust between a representative and the people who entrust him with their collective voice,” he added.
The Kogi East senatorial hopeful urged residents of the district to actively participate in the democratic process by registering to vote, engaging in political discussions, and demanding accountability from elected leaders and aspiring candidates alike.
“Democracy is strongest when the people are informed, active, and engaged. Kogi East deserves purposeful representation, and I am prepared to earn the trust of the people through service, competence, and accountability,” he said.
Suleiman is the ADC candidate for the Kogi East Senatorial District in the 2027 general elections. His campaign organisation, headquartered in Idah, said his candidacy is driven by professional competence, legislative preparedness, and a commitment to responsive representation.
