T.J. Yusuf Wins PDP Kogi West Senatorial Ticket in Landslide, Sets Stage for 2027 Showdown
Former three-term House of Representatives member Tajudeen Ayo Yusuf has emerged as the Peoples Democratic Party candidate for Kogi West Senatorial District, securing a landslide victory at Wednesday’s primary election ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Popularly known as T.J. Yusuf, the veteran legislator polled 7,152 votes to clinch the ticket unopposed, consolidating his influence across the district’s seven local government areas.
Announcing the results, PDP Returning Officer for Kogi West Augustine Oluwatoyin Olowo described the process as transparent, peaceful, and reflective of the will of delegates. The official breakdown showed strong turnout across the board: Kabba/Bunu recorded 1,185 votes from 1,339 accredited delegates; Ijumu 1,085 from 1,190; Yagba West 243 from 243; Yagba East 137 from 153; Mopa-Amuro 132 from 144; Lokoja 2,253 from 2,273; and Kogi LGA 2,117 from 2,300. In total, 7,642 delegates were accredited with 7,152 valid votes cast.
Party officials and delegates said the outcome reflects deep confidence in Yusuf’s grassroots structure and record of representation. He represented Kabba-Bunu/Ijumu Federal Constituency for three consecutive terms, a period marked by constituency projects, empowerment programs, and sustained advocacy on democratic governance.
Political observers say Yusuf’s emergence signals PDP’s intent to mount a serious challenge in Kogi West, where the senatorial contest is already drawing early attention. The district is seen as a key battleground in 2027, with both major parties mobilizing early.
Supporters at the venue erupted in celebration after the announcement, describing the result as a win for experience and tested leadership.
With the ticket now secured, Yusuf is expected to lead PDP’s campaign in what analysts predict will be one of Kogi State’s most competitive senatorial races in 2027.
