Engr. Abubakar Bashiru Gegu is a remarkable individual whose compassionate leadership, humility, and dedication to service have made him a household name in Kogi LGA and across Kogi State. As a distinguished Engineer, politician, and public servant, he has made contributions that many say are unmatched in the state’s history, earning him the love and respect of the vulnerable and the everyday citizen alike.
Since the advent of Nigeria’s nascent democracy, few politicians have etched their name in the heart of the people through community development the way Engr. Bashiru has. His politics is rooted in the grassroots, local, and people-centered. Without mincing words, he has become the best thing to have happened to the people of Kogi LGA.
As Commissioner for Solid Minerals and Natural Resources, Engr. Bashiru has combined servant leadership with practical action. His empowerment programs and support have granted scholarships, settled students’ fees, and helped women and students overcome challenges that once seemed insurmountable. Guided by his philosophy that “the essence of living is to help each other. If you cannot help, don’t hurt each other,” he has made improving the lives of the vulnerable his mission.

Essential services like healthcare, education, and electricity have reached underserved areas, while his kindness and empathy have made him a true reflection of a leader who lives with purpose. Though popular, he fell to the political machinery during the early days of former Governor Yahaya Bello in the bye-election that followed the death of Hon. Buba Jibril. Rather than recoil, he rebuilt, crossing over to the APC where his sincerity and commitment earned him the trust of the Bello administration. That trust launched him into a dual role as strategist and philanthropist.
In Kogi LGA, his name became synonymous with grassroots empowerment. He aligned with the masses, particularly the less privileged, and became a rallying point for communities long neglected. Traditional rulers acknowledge that the upgrades they have received under his influence are unprecedented — schools and roads have found their way into communities that once felt forgotten, while daily empowerment programs have made “Bashiru Gegu” a household name.
Over time, he also earned a reputation as a political oracle. His residence in Gegu Beki became a meeting point for political actors seeking his counsel on the direction of Kogi politics. Ahead of the 2027 election cycle, he declared that Kogi remained a one-party state under the APC, that the state was firmly aligned with President Bola Tinubu and Governor Ahmed Ododo, and that political gravity would eventually shift back to former Governor Yahaya Bello. Many dismissed the prediction at the time, but days to the APC primary, the pattern appears to be unfolding exactly as he foretold.
Beyond politics, Engr. Bashiru has left an indelible mark on the solid minerals sector. He introduced institutional reforms that repositioned the ministry to work for the people rather than a privileged few. For the first time in the state’s history, there is a structured framework for regulating mining activities, ensuring host communities benefit directly from their resources. Licensing processes have been streamlined to curb illegal mining, while partnerships with investors have created jobs and boosted state revenue. Under his watch, Kogi’s vast mineral wealth is no longer a dormant asset but a tool for economic empowerment.
For many in Kogi, Engr. Bashiru Gegu represents the rare combination of a grassroots mobilizer and a reform-minded technocrat. No single individual, dead or alive, is credited with his level of impact in Kogi LGA, a fact traditional rulers and community leaders readily affirm. As Kogi politics enters a new phase, his prophecy has come to pass, and his legacy in both the political and mineral sectors is already being written into the state’s history books.
