In a political climate where loyalty is often seasonal and convenience-driven, the Kogi State Commissioner for Solid Minerals and Natural Resources, Engr. Bashiru Gegu, has earned a reputation as a man who can be tested in loyalty and found dependable.
From his unwavering support for former Governor Yahaya Bello to his steadfast commitment to Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, Engr. Bashiru has emerged as what many in Kogi political circles describe as “the last man standing” in his consistent backing of the leadership he serves. His dedication has not only made him a trusted ally but also a household name in Kogi politics since his appointment under the immediate past administration.
Beyond loyalty, Engr. Bashiru embodies strategic leadership and service delivery. Fondly called “Engr. Bash,” he has become a rallying point in Lokoja/Koton Karfe politics, with his influence cutting across traditional rulers, professionals, women, youth, and the broader political class. His brilliance and generous gestures have extended across the state, making him a blessing to both government and the people.
As a Chemical Engineer trained at the prestigious Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Engr. Bashiru brings intellectual depth and pragmatism to governance. His courage was evident in the past when he led vigilante efforts against kidnappers in Koton Karfe, a move that endeared him to stakeholders across board. Despite his position, he remains simplicity personified, with humility and a proactive approach that set him apart from many of his peers.
At the heart of his mandate is the drive to harness Kogi’s vast mineral wealth for the benefit of all Kogites. Under his watch, the Ministry of Solid Minerals and Natural Resources has been repositioned into a cornerstone of the state’s economic transformation agenda. From the initial 15 mining licenses acquired to the recent addition of another 15, bringing the total to 30, Kogi is now taking deliberate steps to tap its over 30 commercially viable solid minerals, including gold, lithium, limestone, and coal.
The commissioner has also facilitated the procurement of mining equipment, pushing policies that are reducing the state’s reliance on federal allocations and creating jobs through large-scale exploration and mining. These efforts have positioned Kogi as an emerging destination for investors and tourism under the servant leadership of Governor Ododo.
But beyond policy and administration, Engr. Bashiru’s philanthropic footprint remains unmatched in Kogi LGA. In an area that has produced many politicians, none is said to rival his impact in putting smiles on the faces of the vulnerable and less privileged. Known for his discomfort at seeing the oppressed or hungry, his heart has consistently yearned for succor for those in need.
Working closely with Governor Ododo, just as he did with former Governor Bello, Engr. Bashiru has demonstrated a full grasp of his principals’ vision and mission.
