Kogi Police Broker Peace Deal Between Farmers, Herders; 10-Point Resolution Adopted
The Kogi State Police Command has convened a strategic stakeholders’ meeting that produced a 10-point peace agreement aimed at ending recurring clashes between herders and farmers in five local government areas.
The meeting, held Thursday at the State Command Headquarters in Lokoja, was led by the Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi. It brought together local government chairmen of Idah, Ibaji, Dekina, Bassa, and Ankpa LGAs, the State Chairman of Miyetti Allah Association of Fulani Herders, traditional rulers from affected communities, youth representatives, area commanders, and members of the Command Management Team.
According to a statement by Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, the engagement provided a neutral platform for both herders and farmers to “openly air their grievances, concerns, and perspectives on the root causes of the conflicts.”
Key issues raised included destruction of farmlands by grazing cattle, reprisal attacks, poor communication, and the activities of “unruly elements” within both groups.
CP Kankarofi and the LG chairmen mediated the session, urging tolerance, cooperation, and respect for the rule of law.
