THE ABUJA–LOKOJA GRIDLOCK CRISIS: A NATIONAL TRANSPORT EMERGENCY IN PLAIN SIGHT

 

The persistent gridlock along the Abuja–Lokoja Highway and its reverse corridor, the Lokoja–Abuja Highway, has evolved from a periodic inconvenience into a chronic national crisis. These roads are not just transport routes, they are economic arteries connecting Southern Nigeria to the Federal Capital Territory and the wider North; yet what should be a symbol of connectivity has become a daily theatre of frustration, economic loss, and systemic failure. A critical but often underemphasized reality has also emerged from my experience working on the road corridors during previous gridlocks and the recent one.

I have observed that most of the prolonged standstills and extreme gridlocks are not primarily caused by bad roads or construction works as many people opine.

Evidently, among all the factors responsible for gridlocks along both highways, vehicle breakdowns, especially of long trucks and heavy duty vehicles had always been both the remote and immediate cause and the true trigger of total gridlocks.

When such vehicles develop faults, they often block critical sections of the highway, leaving little or no room for other vehicles to manoeuver. Recent experiences underscore this reality.

During the yuletide season of 2025 and the recent one, the breakdown of heavy duty vehicles around Ukwumi area in Lokoja were the immediate cause that also prolonged the gridlocks that stretched up to Abaji in FCT. Such gridlocks have caused incidents where travellers were forced to sleep overnight on a spot on the highway during the 2025 Christmas season and again between Tuesday night and Saturday last week without permanent end in sight as another gridlock can still happen along the corridors. These incidents clearly demonstrate how a single breakdown can immobilize traffic across vast stretches of the highway.

Against this backdrop, the following factors collectively explain the persistence and severity of gridlock along this critical corridor:

1. Deteriorating Infrastructure and Construction Work

While bad spots and ongoing construction works exist along the highways, their role in causing total gridlock is often overstated. Even when they contribute to gridlocks as secondary factors, these conditions typically only slow down traffic rather than halt it completely. In many instances, vehicles are able to navigate these construction or bad sections cautiously unless a breakdown occurs within the narrowed or compromised portions of the road. It is at that point, when a vehicle obstructs movement within an already constrained lane that traffic degenerates into a complete standstill due to bad spots or construction works.

2. Overloaded Vehicles on a Highway Carrying the Weight of a Nation.

The Abuja–Lokoja corridor serves as the principal gateway into Abuja from Southern and parts of Central Nigeria, making it one of the busiest transport routes in the country. This strategic importance places enormous and continuous pressure on the road, with a constant mix of passenger vehicles, commercial transporters, and long-haul trucks. Most of the long trucks that ply the routes are either empty or heavily overloaded Under such overloaded conditions, even minor disruptions, especially breakdowns are magnified, quickly escalating into widespread congestion affecting thousands of road users.

3. The Unregulated Dominance of Heavy-Duty Vehicles

Long trucks and Heavy-duty vehicles dominate this corridor on a 24-hour basis, many of which are poorly maintained and driven by young inexperienced drivers. Over 10,000 long trucks were parked on both sides of the highways, some with heavy loads. Their constant presence increases the probability of mechanical failure, and when breakdowns occur, the size, length and positioning of these trucks often make it difficult to remove them quickly from the roads. This results in prolonged obstruction of traffic flow and significantly contributes to the severity of gridlocks experienced on the highway.

*4. Absence of Vehicle Transit Areas (VTAs)*

The lack of designated Vehicle Transit Areas (VTAs) along the route forces drivers, particularly those operating long-distance and heavy-duty vehicles, to remain on the road for extended periods without adequate opportunities for rest, maintenance, or inspection off the highway. Consequently, minor mechanical issues that could have been addressed off-road escalate into major breakdowns on the highway itself, thereby obstructing traffic and worsening congestion. Also, considering that roads are not built to carry static weight for prolonged periods, their standing still on a particular point further damages the roads.

*5. Proliferation of Unroadworthy Vehicles*

A considerable number of vehicles plying this route are old, poorly maintained, and often overloaded beyond safe operational limits. These conditions significantly increase the likelihood of mechanical failure especially while navigating through bad spots. When such vehicles break down, especially in critical sections of the highway, they become major impediments to traffic flow, triggering cascading delays and widespread gridlock that affects every traveller on that corridor.

*6. Driver Indiscipline*

Driver behavior plays a significant role in aggravating gridlock situations. In many cases, motorists refuse to adhere to traffic instructions, engage in reckless manoeuvers such as driving against traffic, and even intentionally block lanes in attempts to out-pace others. Such indiscipline not only disrupts coordinated traffic management efforts but also compounds the effects of breakdowns, turning manageable situations into complete traffic paralysis and chaos.

*7. Untrained and Compromised Drivers*

The presence of inadequately trained drivers, some of whom operate under extreme fatigue or the influence of substances, further contributes to the problem of gridlocks. These drivers are less likely to detect early signs of vehicle malfunction or respond appropriately under pressure, thereby increasing the likelihood of breakdowns and poor handling of already congested situations.

*8. Seasonal Pressure and System Collapse*

I have also observed that during peak travel periods such as Christmas and Easter, the volume of traffic on this corridor increases significantly. This surge places additional stress on both vehicles and infrastructure, leading to a higher incidence of breakdowns. As seen along the corridors during the 2025 Christmas period and recent events, such breakdowns under high traffic conditions can result in total system collapse, leaving travellers stranded for extended periods, often days.

*9. Weak Emergency and Traffic Management Response*

The absence of efficient emergency response mechanisms, including rapid towing services and specially-trained traffic management personnel, allows broken-down vehicles to remain on the highway for prolonged periods. This delay in clearance exacerbates congestion and prolongs gridlock, highlighting the urgent need for improved capacity in managing road emergencies.

*10. Poor Road Infrastructure*

The Abuja-Lokoja Highway and it’s reverse corridor lacks essential road infrastructure like good road pavements and shoulders, streetlights, road signs and markings, and good drainage systems all through. All these worsen the effects of gridlocks in the night and many vehicle drivers chose to park along the road intentionally to wait for day break.

In conclusion, the major cause of gridlocks along Abuja-Lokoja and Lokoja-Abuja Federal Highways is not bad road or construction works but long trucks and heavy duty vehicles that frequently breakdown along the corridors. This triggers other factors like bad roads, construction works, driver indiscipline, overloading and poor emergency management frameworks etc to worsen the situation as secondary factors. It requires a multidimensional approach to end, otherwise Nigerians will continue to complain and endure significant delays, unsafe travel conditions, and the unacceptable experience of being stranded on highways for hours or even days whenever gridlocks occurs on the corridors.

Kogi State Governor, His Excellency, Alh Ahmed Usman Ododo FCA should be highly commended by Nigerians for always proactively mobilising adequate security to protect lives and properties of travellers along Kogi sections of the road whenever gridlocks occur along the corridors.
