Abuja-Lokoja Road Nightmare Continues: As 7000 Vehicles Trapped, Citizens Cry Out for Govt. Intervention
The Abuja-Lokoja road is still plagued by severe gridlocks, with over 7,000 vehicles stuck for over 12 hours.
The blockage, caused by a pit dug by a contractor and exacerbated by recent rains, has brought the road to a standstill, leaving commuters and motorists suffering.
This isn’t an isolated incident; the road has been notorious for traffic congestion, accidents, and insecurity due to poor conditions and slow rehabilitation works.
The Federal Government has expressed dissatisfaction with the pace of construction, warning contractors to improve performance or face sanctions, unfortunately citizens are the one bearing the brunt.
The road’s importance can’t be overstated – it’s a major gateway linking the Federal Capital Territory to the North Central and parts of the South, serving as a key route for food supplies, fuel distribution, and manufactured goods.
With the Easter festivities underway, the situation is dire, with many Nigerians at risk of spending the holiday on the road.
Experts suggest alternative transport systems, like rail or water transport, could alleviate pressure on the highway. The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has promised completion by April 2026, which has come but with no hope. But citizens are calling for urgent action to address the ongoing crisis as the suffering is untold, affecting the socio economic aspect of the citizens.
