Global Health and Indigent Care Foundation Awards Over ₦55 Million in Scholarships
Lokoja — The 4th Global Health and Indigent Care Foundation (GHICF) Scholarship Award Ceremony was held today, celebrating another milestone in the foundation’s commitment to education, equity, and community development in Ayetoro Gbede and Igbaruku.
Sponsored by Dr. Samuel Oloyo and his wife Mrs. Julie Oloyo, the annual programme supports high‑performing but financially disadvantaged students at both secondary and tertiary levels. Over the past four years, the foundation has invested ₦55 million in scholarships, with ₦19 million committed this year alone.
Key highlights of the award shows that 47 students (up from 30 last year) received awards ranging from ₦150,000 to ₦300,000 across disciplines such as Medicine, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Engineering, Health Sciences, Agriculture, Basic Sciences, and Computing in tertiary institutions categories.
Similarly, the Secondary school awards saw 12 students from four public schools in Ayetoro Gbede earned a total of ₦350,000 for scoring 85 %+ in STEM subjects and English. An additional 172 students received 455 subject‑based awards worth ₦2.5 million for scores between 75 %–84 %.
Others are Special needs support: Five students with disabilities in two public secondary schools received targeted assistance to reduce barriers to learning.
For the Teacher’s and school incentives: Institutions achieving a 70 %+ pass rate in WAEC, NECO, and BEC exams were awarded ₦1.7 million to reinforce quality teaching.
In the Community expansion category, was Funding for Igbaruku community increased from ₦1.7 million to ₦2 million to accommodate more students.
In his keynote address, delivered through Mr. Richard Akanmode (SEAP Secretary), Dr. Oloyo traced the foundation’s inspiration to his upbringing in Ayetoro Gbede and his wife’s roots in Igbaruku, where many bright students could not complete their education due to financial hardship. He emphasized the moral responsibility of giving back and urged scholars to dream big, work diligently, and position themselves competitively in a globalizing world.
Mr. Richard Olonishua, Chairman of the SEAP Committee, described the scholarship as a “bridge between potential and possibility,” anchored on three core objectives: promoting STEM education, fostering healthy academic competition, and easing economic burdens on disadvantaged students.
Past beneficiaries have already demonstrated remarkable success: five have graduated with first‑class degrees and seven with second‑class upper honors. The foundation reaffirmed its commitment to continue and expand the Scholarship and Educational Assistance Programme (SEAP) to empower more students in the years ahead.
The ceremony concluded with gratitude to the Oloyos, the SEAP committee, and all partners for their dedication to uplifting communities through education.
