Rt. Hon. Paul Gowon Haruna Visits Flood Victims in Bassa, Unveils New Empowerment Strategy for Youths
In a profound display of compassion, solidarity, and responsive leadership, the member representing Bassa/Dekina Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Paul Gowon Haruna Ijn, has visited communities in Bassa Local Government Area of Kogi State recently affected by flooding.
During the visit, Hon. Haruna launched the second phase of his Salary and Emoluments Donation Initiative, beginning with Mozum and Ozugbe Wards. He disbursed a total of ₦4 million to support flood victims and those affected by communal crises. Each ward received ₦1.5 million, representing his September and October 2025 salary donations, with an additional ₦500,000 per ward provided in recognition of the severe impact of the disaster.
Explaining the intervention, the lawmaker noted that the extra support to Mozum and Ozugbe was necessary given the large-scale displacement of many constituents to Abaji, Toto in Nassarawa, Lokoja, and other neighboring communities.
Rt. Hon. Haruna emphasized that his new empowerment strategy is designed to cushion the effects of natural disasters by focusing on direct support for vulnerable families. This includes the payment of children’s school fees, settlement of hospital bills, and provision for urgent household needs.
Unveiling the structure of the initiative, he announced that
Each of the 12 wards in Dekina LGA will receive ₦2 million monthly.
Each of the 10 wards in Bassa LGA will receive ₦1.5 million monthly.
These allocations, he stressed, are drawn entirely from his personal salary and emoluments.
“The second phase will focus more on direct welfare support to individuals and families, ensuring immediate impact and building stronger community resilience in times of need. I have also set up a monitoring team to ensure transparency and proper utilization of the funds,” Hon. Haruna stated.
He further outlined the key objectives of the second phase:
Youth empowerment through school fee interventions for less-privileged students.
Healthcare Support through settlement of medical bills for vulnerable constituents.
Disaster Relief for victims of both natural and man-made crises.
This marks a strategic shift from the first phase of his emolument donations, which was largely administered through ward stakeholders, to a more people-centered approach with direct community impact.
He concluded by stating that the next set of wards to benefit from the initiative will be announced prior to the next round of disbursements, after the concrete arrangement on what to do with the money within the ward by the team.
